Bas, I am going to ask you this.. when Rolex started engraving the rehaut, didn’t they also stop engraving the case of the watch with model #s and serial numbers?

The plan is to keep it. It does belong to my mom so the decision is ultimately hers, but we'd much rather have the watch then the money it's worth.

We're going to try and send it out to an RSC this week.

Only the serial was moved off of the lugs. And the earlier one had it marked on both the lugs and rehaut before they switched to just the rehaut.

Great find if legit. But if stolen, RSC will not let you have it back and it won't be so good of a deal then. Best of luck.

Not surprised at all. Personally, I wouldn’t sent it to RSC but a good Indy only.

i also don't want to play Mr Negative, but there is a significant probability that you have here the current state of the art in fake.

Living in the country that produces those fake, I see everyday very decent fakes on the wrist of many young people from the lower-middle class (half trainers of my gym club have the GMT LN replica) That model is also the most franken-ed these days. They perfectly got the case/bezel and movement copied, just the hands can be purchased in aftermarket.

The fact that this is precisely a GMT LN your mom found is suspicious for me.

Thanks.

In this case it could well just be a generous donation maybe. Although if this was the case I would want them to know it was genuine so they could realise full financial benefit.

I spoke to a lady at my local charity shop to ask her about watches they get in as she could be missing the opportunity for decent money for certain vintage models even if they weren’t working (can you imagine some old dear looking at an old Heuer that “doesn’t work” and chucking it). She told me she has a woman who came in offering her services, she takes all the watches and jewellery and if watches need batteries she’ll get them working and give them back, if not she gets rid of them for them

Crazy story. But I couldn't wear it knowing it could be stolen, and wondering under what circumstances.

If stolen it needs to go back to its rightful owner.

I like your story and I hope it's a legitimate find.

Completely agree. That's why it's going to go out to an RSC to settle that issue.

That kind of defeats the object of wanting it’s legitimacy checked out by sending to Rolex.

Solid move - great find if it’s all good but I think I may be inclined to make a charitable donation to balance out the good fortune and very low price too

Pretty good odds that it is not stolen, Thrift stores work on donations. Estates are cleared all the time. Locally a home was cleared and some of the coats had 1,000's of dollars in the pockets. Old guy simply squirrelled his money in kinds of things. More money was found inside the base of the tv and no he wasn't a drug dealer just a simple old gentleman that kept cash around the house.

I have found some really cool paintings at thrift stores.
They get stuff in boxes and bags all the time and anything can be in them. I have had the fortune of getting a vintage rolex 1940's "Rolex Standard Drivers watch" in a bag of broken watches.

Lol, funny story....

A thrift store would sell a FAKE Rolex for $1,000???

You're telling us they KNEW it was fake...and yet they are asking a $1,000?

C'mon man...nice story though, a lot of people here seem to believe it.

I'm with these guys quoted below...notice how the OP disappeared once people starting posting this?

I don't buy this story

Seems the thrift store wants to specify the category of item prices on their receipts. Maybe there's a yellow section of items, and this item was within that section. Notice the price tag is yellow?

Lol I’m right here. I have nothing to gain from telling this story so believe if you want or not.

I don’t even know if they really knew anything about it. They initially said they didn’t know anything about it and when I pressed my mom to press them on its legitimacy they said it’s fake. Which still, who knows. I’m pretty confident it’s legit at this point, but until I send it out it’s not 100%.

Exactly this. they categorize items by color. This one had a yellow price tag.

Interesting thread. I had no idea the cutting edge fakes from Singapore could fool most people. That’s a scary thought. OP what’s the laser etched crown on the crystal like?

Hoping this one ends well.

It WILL end well. He will either gain a cheap ($700) education at “The College of Counterfeit Rolex”, or gain a nice watch. Win Win!
