is this DJ 36 or 41?

I think it's a 36 but can't tell for sure
what are some ways to spot a 36 vs 41 from the photo?

Thats a 36mm, just based on the case geometry. Also the lugs are brushed, and it has the folded steel clasp, which also means its an older 36mm. Also, notice the T SWISS MADE T on the dial? That indicates a tritium dial, dating it to the 1970s-Late 1990s. There are no 41mm tritium dials, as they are a newer reference.

Hope this helps.

It is a 16030 and it is evidently a 36mm.

The easiest way to differentiate is probably the bezel thickness. It is quite a bit thicker than the 36. As for your photo, the first 41mm models probably weren't even around yet.

The Datejust 2 (the first 41mm) was released around 2009 and its proportions were a bit bloated. It was replaced in 2016 by what is actually referred to as the Datejust 41 and it has nicer proportions than the DJII but you can still tell the difference from a 36mm by the bezel thickness.

It’s a vintage piece and the 41mm didn’t come out until around 2018. The datejust 2 which came out in the mid 2000s is very chunky. Anything older is gonna be 36.

Stamped Jubilee, plexi crystal, tritium dial, thin/worn fluted bezel, all wrapped around an early pillow and box - these things are not found on the newer 41mm version.
