What's going on with the 16570?!

Hi all,

I've been keeping my eye on these for a few months now... What's going on? Prices have surpassed 8k (UK) with watch, box and papers! Wowza! The 3185 movement also seems to be more expensive than the 3186?

Is anyone able to shed some light?

The Swiss dials are going for like 9k?

I think they were under the radar for a while and because of that, they were more available. Now the climate has been to buy any Rolex you can. I also feel like Rolex will update it this year and the prices will go up even more. Just my guess, not based on any other info.

Lots more people interested in and learning about Rolex now. Many of them prefer the 5 digits and are buying them.

I think Explorer II's are going to get super hot with the anticipation of the 50th anniversary release. For me the 216570 is the best Explorer of any generation. If Rolex refreshes it, I hope they do something that keeps the bright orange.

Everyone has an opinion of which Expl II is the best, I have owned both the newer one and the 16570 and for me the latter, due to comfort and size, but to each his own.

I think the 16570 is getting swept up in the total Rolex shortage of SS watches. I note on some reseller forums that DJ41’s are asking for a premium over msrp. Now that President Biden is sporting the DJ41 with a Jubilee bracelet, blue dial, I would expect some hype on that.

It was only a matter of time. It was the last place to score a deal in the 5 digit world.

People are out of their minds. It’s an awesome watch, but i bought my last one for about $4500. That was less than 2 years ago. I simply don’t think they are worth 8k or more.

The crazy thing is, you don't have to. Hundreds if not thousands of people do. If the rumors are true and the next release will be a 50th anniversary, expect prices to touch 10K on those unworn 216570's. I could be wrong, but my understanding is AD's aren't even getting any. *Not that they'd sell them to us mortals if they were.

If the rumors are true, I shudder to think what these will fetch over retail.

I've been wanting a polar for years and passed on 2 that were at an AD back in 2012 for $3,600. I'm wishing I would have pulled the trigger back then.

Now I'm watching a few and they are all in that $8k range. That's crazy because I also want the new sub, and if I get the call I can get the new sub without date for the same price plus tax. I really want both but the sub is by far a better value for the dollar, if I get called of course.

Yeah, it’s almost the same with the black sub - a few years back prices for the five digits were close to 5k now your looking at 9k or more...

The 16570 and 16710 are my favorite references. So comfortable to wear and were reasonable buys up until 18 months ago.

They are practically indestructible! I remember buying my first one and then considering a second one as a beater. In those days, a 16570 polar can be had for about $4200 cash at a second hand watch dealer with some watches. But no longer, those days are long gone.

Of course for those of us mere mortals who purchased the 16570 (Polar in my case) from an AD (2011) because it was then and is now a superior watch, seeing a paper ROI on an 'investment' is better than hearing the opposite. I say paper because it's the center piece of my modest collection and it is not for sale.
