5170J vs 5140P
So guys I'm considering trading my trusty 5170J for a 5140P.
There are three 5140P's - the blue dial, the grey dial and the black with diamond hour markers. I'm considering either the blue dial or the rather dressy black one. FYI, I wear my different "strap" Pateks all the time, so I'm not overly worried about about something being overly dressy. Nor being too small etc... Thoughts please. |

Purely personal preference I like the blue dial over the grey and the black with diamond markers.

Good move I think. I would rather go 3940P but among the 5140P options the grey one has grown on me lately. I wouldn't mind the black one if it had baguette diamond markers which it doesn't and I am not much into blue dial dress watches.

I like the blue best. The black is really nice too (good contrast of platinum and black dial).

I would for a 3940J or P and likely also 5140P. I don't love the romans on the 5170J and more generally I don't have any use for the chrono function on a dress watch which is why I have never gotten any manual wind dress chrono. I appreciate the beauty of those movements but in the end I am a guy who wants to use stuff rather than turn it around and examine it with a loupe. At the same time I very much like the 240 powered PCs except for the most recent iteration.

I echo the view of rather going 3940. The platinum version is amazing.

Really like the 5140P! 3940 is up there as much as the 5140, too. 5140 for size, 3940 for dial design.
Chrono's great, but I find the perpetual calendar to be a more convenient and useful feature for a daily-wearer. |

I would keep 5170J! The day will come when YG will be inn again and PP has produced so many more of 5140 and 3940.

In general, P is better than a J. Trustworthy 240Q movement on the 5140P vs the in-house manual chrono movement on the 5170, they are both great watches. Best answer is to own both

I already have a 5070J as well! That’s what got me thinking about a 5140p. Something a little different! |

i would actully keep your manual wound chrono and i bet it will be the next 1463 or 5070 (it is the first inhouse manual wound chrono). i love the PC but i would save for it rather than give up your 5170J

Id keep the 5170. A Manual winding chrono by Patek. First inhouse. Itll be a classic. And it has a vintage feel to it. One of my favorite Pateks. You can still find them at bargain low prices but for how long?

Have you looked at 5327 G ? The blue dial and scalloped lugs are phenomenal, plus it is a 39
Mm piece. You can get on from a grey for 60- 65 USD - MSRP is 96 so it’s a great buy IMO. I would not want a 37 mm because it would be very difficult to resell if you ever wanted to once again just imho. I love mine.james in San Antonio Tx.:-) |
