How important is the new 5 year warranty to you?

I thought this might be an interesting topic since AP recently started the new 5 year warranty. Since AP service costs so much and their movements seem to be a little less reliable than say a rolex imho I think the 5 year warranty adds a significant value to the watch. I don't mean to say that Rolex is a better movement but just that it is more simplified and requires fixing less often from my experience.

Say you were looking at two AP watches to buy. One is from 2016 and one is from 2017 and both are LNIB. the 2016 watch only has 2 years left on the warranty while they 2017 watch has a full 5 years. What is 3 extra years warranty on an AP worth to you in terms of $$$? To me it is EASILY worth $1000. Do you agree?

I would not pay $1K more for just the warranty...if you dig into the details a bit more, I think you'll find that if any issues pop up, it's usually pretty soon from new, fixed under warranty, and that's it.

Not for me. In my experience (7 years with about 10 RO/ROO) if the AP works fine the first or second year there won't be any reason why it won't do it in the fourth year e.g...All the issues which I had were in the first year so the 3 year warranty always was enough for me...

I totally respect your personal experience but i just feel safer having 3 extra years warranty on a watch that costs over 2k to service. 5 years is a long time to have peace of mind from manufacture defects. They can have my 1k because I can afford it now. In 4 years if i have kids running around the house who knows what I will be able to afford

It’s like insurance policy. If nothing happens, it make no difference. If something happens, it makes all the difference.

That's true, but with someone who sells you insurance, they've already done the statistics for you...and more times than not, they make the $.

Who are we kidding josh, you aren’t going to have a watch longer than 2 years

I’d say 500-1000 would be the range.

I’ve always bought my APs new from the same AD and never had a problem so never had to rely on the warranty. That said, if I was buying used then I would want the maximum warranty possible, you never know how careful the previous owner was or whether there is an underlying issue with the mechanism.

In general its not a factor for me either way. If im buying, im buying no matter if its a 2, 3, or 5 year factory warranty. I look at the new 5 year warranty as a bonus or like a piece of swag you get with purchase. Its nice to get, but its not why you bought the watch.

I suppose for a used watch its more important, but as previously noted they tend to break early on anyway if you are going to have an issue so i suspect the extra warranty is for piece of mind mostly, and has little practical value.

I do feel heaps better with the AP 5 year warranty as I've had issues with a ROO and my 15300 where as never had a drama with a Rolex.

Do think AP movements are finished much better then Rolex but nowhere as robus or reliable.
