Help Decide: GMT Master "Swiss only" vs GMT Master 2 "Coke"
Hi guys I've been into collecting Rolex watches for over 2 years now but never into the more older models (non ceramic). I currently live in Thailand and is moving to England soon so I wanted to do something with my collection. I'm current in a trade between a Rolex date just 36 mm two tone rose gold with diamonds indexes, a Tudor black bay heritage 41 mm blue bezel and a Tag Heuer Formula 1 Calibre 16 (chronograph) for a total of around $13,000(this is my very first time selling watches and I don't know if they're giving me too little or not, but this is the best price I can find). I'm currently looking at 2 Neo-vintage Rolex from two different dealers here in Thailand and aren't so sure about the price. The first one is a Rolex GMT Master Pepsi "A" serial 1999 "Swiss only" no box no paper for around $13,650 and the second one being Rolex GMT Master II coke 2005 no box no paper for around $14,250.

I have recently had a similar dilemma. Between a 2003 Pepsi 16710 no papers, and a tritium dial 1997 16710 coke box and papers. I went coke. Partly because it's a complete set, but also I prefer the. Original coke insert

Is the pepsi a GMT Master while the coke is a GMT master II? If so, the movements are different. The GMT II has the independently adjustable hour hand.
The later 2005 GMT master II will have a no-holes case and solid end links on the bracelet. For me, I think condition would play a big part of what I decide- pick the watch that's in better condition. If the condition is the same, I think I would prefer the earlier 99 model personally. I prefer the holes case. |

Suggest you research the differences between the 16700 and 16710.
Both great watches, but 24 hour hand works differently. Over their production periods, various aspects changed such as dials, lug holes, end links and movement. Also both can be had on oyster or jubilee bracelets. Pepsi, coke and black inserts. Everyone has their own preferences, 16710 more popular as more made. For me, I prefer the 16700 Gmt Master as it has the quick set date. ‘Swiss only’ 16700 is one of the last made. |

You can't go wrong with either watch. If you are still indecisive, try this thread I put together which examines the differences between the various GMT and GMT II models.

Sounds like you are looking at either a 16700 GMT, or a 16710 GMT II.
As mentioned, either one is great for a true collection. If you travel a lot, then the adjustability of the GMT II hour hand is a convenience. As far as presence on the wrist, they both look the same and so it's either pepsi or coke.

A rule of thumb I use is always buy the the older version as broadly less of them and more vintage ouvre ...so 1016 over a 14270, 1655 over 16550, 1675 over a 16750, 1665 over a 16660, 1601 or 1603 over a 16030, 5513 over 14060, 1680 over 16800, 5508/6536/1 over 5513...takes a while for the shaking of the tree to settle but usually the older one feels more special....so 16700 from me if you can't stretch to a 16750 or 16760 which I think eclipse both a smidge :-).

I just picked up my 97 16710 coke. So happy with it. It's a beautiful unpolished and clearly looked after example.

You can easily change bezel insert si I wouldn’t based my choice on that. I would buy the one in the best condition with sharp and fat case and crownguards and nice chamfers.

Condition first, of course, but all things being equal, I much prefer the more old-school 16700 with the "regular" quick-set date feature where you don't need to spin the hour hand round and around to set the date like on the 16710.
The 16700 is also slightly thinner, and is the last of the true Rolex GMTs (as opposed to the GMT IIs). |
