Vintage Omega Speedmaster Watch
Hi there, I need some help. I inherited my dad's watch collection and in the bunch was the Speedmaster Moon watch I always wanted from him as a kid. He bought it in that era but I do not remember. How can you tell the year on these. The stainless band says 1171 inside. It's got to be from 1970 or something, how can I tell? Any other markings? In the box he kept it in was a 1969 watch on the moon add featuring John F Kennedy. Any help would be appreciated.

Well that dial is a modern 97' - current. He must have had it serviced at some point and the dial and hands were replaced. You can tell the year of production based on opening up the case back and comparing the serial number to chuck maddox list.

Reply not working?
Hopefully this doesn't show up 3 times as I tried to reply and it's not showing up. Here goes again.
My bad for using a pic that looked like my watch, didn't know there were so many variants. My cell camera pic is crappy so I'm posting it to better represent the watch. The bottom of my dial days T SWISS MADE T. The clasp has a not quite a square indent with the Omega logo. I'm told it's 1974? I guess I need to open it but the sticky ball will not do it :( |

Don't worry about the pics. A serial number is what you really need.

It's an Oldie but goodie
Wow, they know there stuff there. They opened it up and it's a caliber 861 and the serial # indicate it's an early 1974, my mother said I was ten when dad bought it. Hard to believe it's 37 years old and keeps perfect time! Mom says I admired it long ago called the 3 dials inside moon craters. It's amazing inside. Thanks dad, I will wear it with the same pride you did.
