51 and got a 5168 - I had my dealer put me on the list for either the 5167 or 5168 - and fortunately (or not for my wallet) the one I wanted more came in right away! I wear it but those micro scratches yikes. Has me worried, I hope I'm not killing it's value- not that I did it really for value anyways. right?

I bought my first Patek (5711 white dial) when I was 26. I've been in and out of quite a few of them but now I've got a 5712r and a 5905p and cherish them.

I have been saving for a Patek, I am 35, want a 5726/1A-001 - but looks like that watch is about 9 years away for me - with real life in the way, I cannot dedicate too much towards my watch fund right now - with a new house last year and new baby on the way, got to prioritize those over the Patek Fund

Just wondering when people get their Patek's - how old were you and what watch was it??

Need some motivation that it will be worth it!!
Interesting question that has resulted in some interesting answers. Based on the high number of young owners, I think a great follow up is...

1. If you are below 30 did you purchase it with your own money...25 might be a better age actually.
2. If so, how did you get the money
3. What is your career

thats a slippery slope. It implies that young people dont earn their own money because its not a question you would ask a 55 year old even though he might have used family money, but everyone just assumes he earned it.

In general, i assume finance is one of the popular fields of all Patek owners of all ages. Law, and medicine are probably next.

If i used my beer money for watches instead (in college), i could have had a Patek by the time i graduated no problem. I delivered pizza for a while.

True. Under 25 is probably a better age as a 30 year old has 5-8 years to earn depending on degree. A different perspective is that the 21 year old DID earn their money, but HOW did they earn it. I am 39. When I was growing up I could never have earned enough to buy a 50k watch. In today's technological world there are probably many ways a smart, motivated teenager could make a lot of money.

they have no expenses either. I blew so much money on stupid stuff when i was young. As long as you direct it to watches a pretty low salary can get you a patek... with no mortgage, no kids, no responsibilities. Maybe not 50k, but a 5167 or something similar.

Agree this question can be a slippery slope but for those more "mature" in age on this forum who are shocked when they hear of < 30 year olds (or even < 25 year olds!) with (many) pateks, I'd say take solace that there are 7 billion people in this world and everyone structures their finances differently. I've owned a few pateks in my 33 years and have the income to justify purchases but as much as I love this hobby, I wouldnt want any greater than 5-10% of my net worth in watches. Some people in this forum would respectfully disagree with me. I'd also say that as financially successful as we all may be, watches are so much more affordable than high end classic cars or even a decrepit apartment in some of the cities people here live-NYC/Tokyo/HK. Heck, buying a parking space to put your honda civic in some of these cities can cost more than a grand complications.

I was 11. Dad was wrenching on his GTB and took a break to have a sip of 47 cheval blanc when he decided his 1518 was too much to bear and it was time to pass it on.

How old were you when you got your first Patek?

Imho not the best question. I know several people under 30 that could easily afford one on their own dime. Someone that’s married with 2 kids at 40 is probably more strapped for cash than a single under 30 year old that is smart with his $$$. That said I’m 33 and never owned one but have had a dozen or so Rolexes and an AP. I purchased my Corvette new outright in 05 after saving a few years. I also purchased a 31 foot Contender last year at 32 (definitely not outright). Sure the watches would hold value but I like to have fun. My first PP will come one day if I can stay off the boat forums.

yeah, its gets tougher as you get older, not easier. Kids are expensive.

58 years, for a 5726A-001 - I remember when I was younger going into a jewelry story in Las Vegas . . . I could never afford anything - way too poor back then. Just to look and dream. Then I went into the military and purchased my first watch from that same store . . . a Rolex GMT that got stolen in Korea out of my quarters while I was up on the DMZ. After fighting with my insurance company - they finally paid me off and I bought another Rolex - a Submariner . . . from that same store. It was then that I first saw the Patek Philippe line-up. They were so so expensive and seemed so out of reach. I guess i never thought I could ever get one. Now, I am just about ready to retire - so I treated myself to a watch I knew the military could never give me. . . . I mean aren't you supposed to get a watch when you retire?

Well I started working part time when I was 16.. full time when I was 21 straight after uni.. saved up and bought my first house when I was 24 with a 20% deposit.. and a few more houses after topping up from my first house..Well I don't drive a fancy car tho.

So I guess owning a $20k watch isn't that hard when you are 30 right? I also own a tudor hydronaut (first ever watch), Tudor BB, Rolex Batman as well and an ap26470 vampire which I have sold to free up some cash before.

Why wouldn’t it work? I know a lot of sub 30s who have jobs raking in 6 figures without kids. It works in this day and age

It's interesting to see so many people in their twenties owning Pateks... Back in the day I was most likely the youngest person in the room when hanging out with collector friends, (I started at 16, obviously with much cheaper pieces) so it's nice to see! Back in 2012 was when I acquired my first Patek, I was 21 and it was a blue 5711. I just turned 26 and I no longer have a 5711 but have a 5146a and am hoping to acquire perhaps a 5960a or 5524 maybe sometime in the future
