Naff Bond Association

It’s bank holiday in the UK so watching James Bond - standard.

Ian Fleming wrote bond with a non specific Rolex model. In the films, he’s worn Breitlings, Seikos and now Omega.

There’s been some lovey Omega watches recently (spectre 300m, No Time to Die and 60th anniversary editions) but the bought association and 007 references ruin them for me. Horology, imho, is about tradition and authenticity and the bond thing flies against all that.

Anyway, no work tomorrow and I’m on the IPA.

Be interested to hear your thoughts!

The "Bond thing" is now part of history for Omega. Worn in a classic and popular movie series. I believe it has it's place in horological Omega history at this point.

Hear what your saying. It has been a good 30 year association now. Not to be dismissed!

All part of the Franchise now. I like the current watches and think the Omega watches are very cool.

I really like the NTTD on NATO, but I think it is way overpriced, even grey/used. I think if it did not have the 007 connection, the watch would be a few thousand cheaper.

You can’t really relate it back to what Fleming wrote as Casino Royale is the only “Omega movie” that’s based on one of his books so the watch he wears, car he drives, era it’s set in etc etc are made for the films with really only passing references to the books. The early Connery films stay close but once Roger Moore came along (my era as a kid) and started doing Carry On Bond the alignment with Fleming was gone.

I agree. Connery and Craig were the closest Bonds to Fleming’s books by far. The others are cartoonish in comparison.

For me, the whole Bond association gets cheesy the moment they start putting 007 and other Bond related symbols on the watch. If it's a clean watch then I'm fine with it.

I have the NTTD watch. Bought it not as a Bond fan, but as a fan of the watch. Also have a WWII Omega Dirty Dozen so the broad arrow didn't bother me and the Bond reference was only on the back of the watch case.

I realize the same watch without the Bond reference would be cheaper, but I like the watch enough to pay for the up charge.

As a side note, I've since read all of the Bond books and a few of the newer Bond books. Can't say I loved all of them, but I appreciate them for what they are.... and they were all better than the movies.

agree. I’ve had my ‘Brosnan’ bond since ‘98. Love the watch but wouldn’t have bought if any 007 logos/ markers
