Pie-pan or pan-pie?

I've heard both "pie-pan dial" (a dial that looks like an upturned pie pan) and "pan-pie dial" (a dial that looks like the underside of a pie cooked in a pie pan). Which one?

Honestly, I have never heard of a pan-pie dial, and when I googled it the only hits were for pie-pan. Is this thread serious? Did you try google?

This is literally the first time I've heard "pan-pie". This should be a fun poll though.

Some Omega dials circa 1960ish are called pie pan. Pan pie is a new one to me.

I have a vintage Omega Constellation “pie pan” in my collection. A gorgeous, classic piece. Never heard of “pan pie”, but it might be delicious.

Pie pan, in my books. Had a few, never seen them called the other way around!

I heard "pan-pie" on the Worn and Wound podcast today (Episode 117). I wondered if it was a legitimate variant or just a slip of the tongue, because both kind of make grammatical/logical sense - one referring to the pan and one referring to the pie itself.

I knew our expert community here would provide more reliable results than Google, as it indeed has done. We're all here to learn.

I like it. It's awkward. If you've ever wondered why it's "butterfly", since there's obviously no butter, and they're prettier than adult maggots, remember the original name was "flutterby", which actually makes more sense.

Pretty sure that's incorrect. And I only bring this up because I dated a girl who was something of a obsessively avid amateur lepidopterologist, and I remember that the word's etymology is old English (or possibly German) for Butter Fly.

No such thing as a stupid question, especially where vintage Rolex is concerned (apart from the golf one, maybe :-).

Here's my pie-pan/step Datejust. Cyclops needs a little Polywatch.

Thanks! But for the record, my DJ is really a 1603 with a 1600 bezel installed in that photo, to mix up the look. Here it is with its original bezel (and crystal) back on .... but still a "pie-pan" dial!

Big shout-out and thanks to Kingface66 for getting me back into the butterfly-word-origin controversy. Some great research out there now. Definitely not German, but the idea of thieving butterflies traveling the countryside taking honest folks' butter, that's just a great image.

I love that 1603 with both bezels, thanks to swish77 for posting. I don't have a single smooth bezel 16xx, and now I am envious.
