16710 B&P question

I’m looking hard at a 16710 and I’m curious if having box and papers is something a collector views as necessary?

The price D appears to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500-2500k.

So I’m sure I’m like everybody else, I would rather have B&P but is it worth the price? Does it make it much easier to sell? Some of these are getting old enough that it may be considered an exception.

Also, can I also send to RSC (eventually) and receive the service card, try to come up with a period correct box and come out ok?

I’m just trying to figure out if I should ignore the watch-only listings and concentrate only on full-set.

Anything else I’m missing?

You’re going to get alot of differing opinions on this subject.

I think where I’ve landed, is that a complete set is important to me. It’s not that old of a watch and I’d like to think the previous owner cared enough to keep all the goodies that make it feel special (to me). I also just feel better knowing it’s provenance.

Don’t get me started on polished vs unpolished … although I think I’m coming around to a conclusion on that as well

Focus on the condition of the watch. If it that watch happens to come with B&P and your budget allows, great. If not, I wouldn't let it be a deal-breaker.

However, there are some collectors who must have B&P, the same way some collectors of, say, vintage toys must have the original packaging. If you're one of those guys, ignore above advice.

I totally agree! Most of my watches have B&P's but I bought a few "naked" from trusted sellers because of condition. Here's one...

Most collectors prefer a watch in nice condition with the added extras such as box and papers etc. The price difference is minimal (20% to 25%) which will make it worth the difference when you go to sell it some day.

Personally, I would recommend the complete set if there are not any issues with the watch.

Most here will tell you condition of the watch trumps any box and papers. If you get both that’s great. Would you wear the box and papers? For most the box and papers will just sit in a closet gathering dust. I have many.

Every collector is different. You need to figure out where you land on this topic for yourself, and it may take some trial-and-error. Over time, as you buy and own and sell multiple watches, you will find your comfort level.

No, not always. Depends on the watch, condition, and future speculation. Some always will, if it is what they are collecting - others collect watches.

All else being equal box & papers will add to the value. As Brian says it potentially shows a certain level of care from the owner. How much it adds is a question only the buyer can answer.

Buy the best you can afford if that comes with B+P then even better. For me I’m not as precious about papers but others look at it completely differently

For a 16710 it’s a must have, I would never buy this rather modern reference without all that came with it.

I'd rather have a pristine watch than a mediocre watch with a box that I store in another box in my closet. Am I happy when I get a box and documentation? Sure, but give preference to the best watch.

I'm no pro by any means but I recently (5 days ago) picked up my first ever Rolex without B&P because the condition and cost vs what I would get with B&P. I also plan on wearing and enjoying the watch so B&P doesn't really mean as much to me personally.

Don't fret about them and don't overpay for them.

My main collector sweet spot is firmly 1953-64 (gilts), very few have b and p, so I'd practically have not bought any if I'd fetishised over papers and full sets!

For 90s watches and later, Papers are a must IMO.
Simply because they don’t command a huge premium and many beautiful watches are available with Papers.

Before the 90s not a must for me.

Rolex service card is nice (if the watch is still in original condition) but does not add any premium for me.

Simple:

Condition > Papers > Full-set

For me, personally, if condition is excellent but no papers, I'm out. If condition is "ok" with papers, I'm also out.
