The frozen Air King
Hi, guys, few years ago I made a freezing test on one Air King, just for see if it will survive and keep the time perfectly
Then, the time came to share my experience with TRF This is the last time testing before the "icy diving" I put the water until the crown Then, you will see the results 12 hours after :D P.S. the bottle of the pepper vodka right side down the pic have nothing with my experience! |

12 hours after....
You can see the Air King lost 57 sec in 12 hours. I have to say, it has been used for 5 years without service, always run well. When the temperature came back to normal, the Air King was running as previously, taking about 5 sec day. Ho said the Air King is not a hard core tool watch? |

Interesting....thanks for writing up your experience. I would think that somehow the lubricants in the movement would freeze/harden up...but I guesss not

Akira:
Very cool post!...pun intended. It's fascinating that it lasted so long in such a frigid state. As a longtime lurker, I give your post a 10 out of 10. For us Northlanders, the question of whether or not our watches will survive those unbearably cold winters and of course, an unfortunate dip into a frozen Lake Michigan has just been answered. |

Well done!
I like those types of tests. And one shouldn't be suprised about the outcome. Any Oyster can take it. Best, A |

I'm pretty sure freezing a Rolex is illegal. Especially an Air-King.
Let me try that! |

No fear of that happening. Rolex watches have been worn on expeditions to the Antartica, the coldest place on Earth, where temperatures plunge down to -60șC and the Rolex has continued to work perfectly!! JJ

I wouldn't worry about the oils, they just slow it down, the worst that could happen with them is that they'd get thick enough to stop the watch. I'd be more worried about the freezing water (which expands) forcing its way into the case or damaging the case or seals. If nothing else, I certainly wouldn't want to do it over-and-over (as this would tend to wedge the case open, the same way that freezing water wedges rocks apart).
