Sub maxi case, is it possible to . . .

. . . reduce the lug size giving it a more 5-digit appearance?

Not looking for your opinion as to which looks better.

Just want to know if anyone has seen this done with good results? And, if so, by who?

..Not sure if you'll find folks here who have significantly altered the case after purchasing to make it wear smaller. It would probably be better just to pick up at 5 digit if you're not into the super case / maxi case..

If that is still the route that you want to go - you could ask LA Watch Works or Rolliworks to see if they could take of some material but keep the edges sharp....

You reduce it enough you could also have lug holes.

If you actually own one and wear it, the lugs are really not an issue at all as you just don't notice them on your wrist.

If you were to modify one, you would kill the value of it and RSC will not work on it.

There are a number of after market shops that grind off crown guards, shape lugs, and paint dials.

It's your watch and you can find good craftsmanship to carve it up however you want. What would look good on the larger maxi-case would be deep cut chamfers on the lugs, like the early models had.

Most folks do not customize their watches, but there are plenty who do.

Tempus Machina and Bamford both do custom case cutting.

I've worn one. I noticed.

Not worried about about RSC working on it if it's out of warranty. There are competent others.

Kill the value? If well done I think it would sell quickly.

I got a quote from Artisans de Geneve to turn a 116619 into a 16619. They can and will do it. Others may as well.

I haven’t completely rejected the idea. I despise the maxi case too.

Why not buy a 14060M? Same movement smaller lugs.

The maxi case is so disproportional, it’s not possible to make it look worse.

Consider some nice chamfers on the lugs similar to the 5513 also.

I would like to see the results if modified.

Then wouldn't the easier solution be to just buy a new bracelet for a five-digit watch?

New SEL bracelets do not fit 5-digit Subs.

The Glidelock might be an option: not cheap and not easy to source

Didn’t someone here do this already ...

I’ve been searching for the thread and can’t seem to find it, but I thought I recall reading it here.

You can easily do it yourself with a grinder. Life is short. Go for it!

Anything is possible with the $$. But that is quite a mod, where the architecture of the piece is fundamentally altered. I would argue if you have to go through all that to make the piece work for you, then consider a different piece. It’s ok, the watch may not be for you.

If the urge is to just have a “Rolex” on the wrist and this is the only way you can like the watch, then ok. But I would look at their other pieces or other companies to see if you can find something without the gymnastics of making it work.

But for me, there is a point to where a mod is not really the same piece anymore.

Why don't you take a hammer and smash the watch to pieces, then throw it in the ocean.

Yeah, cause that’s exactly the same thing as preferring slimmer lugs or crown guards while liking other updates. Good suggestion.

It’s your watch, do what you want.
It’s a brave move and I’d be interested to see the results. I also dislike the maxi cases.

Why buy the watch in the first place?!

Why buy a car and swap wheels? Why buy a house and remodel? Why buy a plane and gut/replace avionics?

Are you being intentionally obtuse, or just being dramatic because you think a watch that says “Rolex” is somehow sacred?

Or you can do what I did and add a glidelock clasp to a 14060M. Probably a whole lot cheaper than modifying a maxi case.
