Has Social Media influenced you to purchase a Rolex?

A prevalent theory as to the uptick in demand for Rolex is that people are being influenced by Rolex content on social media such as instagram. These people then go out and purchase a Rolex.

Is that you?

I am curious as to if a mostly WIS group would be influenced by social media as the general public is thought to be?

No, I don't need encouragement from some "celebrity / influencer" to purchase a particular Rolex.

I was just talking with a friend about this yesterday. I absolutely couldn’t imagine getting a new watch and posting it on social media (edit: except TRF, but that doesn’t count). The idea of doing such is both uncomfortable and unattractive. It completely blows my mind that anyone would want to do this let alone it being a common social media trend.

If you're led around by social media, you have a serious self identity problem. Most of these "opinion influencers" are absolute idiots.

This forum is all WIS (well mostly) hence 90%+ are going to say SM has nothing to do with their purchase decisions.

Put this poll on a culture, urban or style forum and see the big difference in results.

Instagram is an incredible tool for looking at real-world photos of various watch references. But carry on with your cloud yelling.

At the same time statements "old National Geographic ads influenced my purchase" are warmly welcomed here

I guess I'm in the minority here. I use certain YouTube channels (content creators I respect) as a part of my research into what I want to buy. Especially since some channels offer in depth interviews with watch creators and CEOs.

I also use this site quite regularly, and have gained a wealth of knowledge from the amazing people on the forums. That has certainly shaped and guided some of my purchases.

Although I follow a ton of watch pages on Instagram (individuals, companies, journalists) I don't use it at all in my decision process. I gather little information from the posts. To me, Instagram is just surface- level eye candy, wherein little substantial information can be gathered.

I don't do social media, but I do blame all of you here on TRF for showing and discussing all of the latest models that I now want! Lol!

If social media counts as... looking at comparison pics, sizing, color pics, video reviews, etc....then yes, I’ve used social media when shopping for a watch. Can’t exactly see them, or try them on, while at the AD these days.

Reading some of these comments, are people aware that YouTube and TRF are technically social media sites?

Social media isn't just Facebook, Instagram and twitter...

Right. I feel like the OP’s question was essentially “have you purchased a watch because you saw it on X celebrity’s wrist?”

If that’s the question, the answer is no. However, “social media” can be a very useful tool. In fact, one of the ONLY tools when the situation is you have to put down a deposit sight unseen and then wait years.

exactly. I should’ve clarified...I’ve never purchased “because of” social media...but used it to help make decisions.

Doesn't necessarily have to be that. Constantly being exposed to Rolex or AP or Patek you will be getting influenced without knowing it. Its called something in social marketing forgot the term they use.

You ARE being influenced just not so obviously.

Nope...at least not in the sense of Facebook or Instagram. I've been into watches since a young kid and have my Dad and Uncle to thank for my interest in these wonderful little mechanical timekeepers.

Sorry to make anyone's head explode here, but participating in this very social form of communication with technology such as the internet that reaches and influences people widely throughout the world is the very definition of Social Media.

You all do and have social media.

Just take a moment and let that wash over you.....

Haha, I'm saying the same thing. There is a ton of irony on this thread....

Hahahaha - your right there. TRF is a kind of social media in itself. I think the guys are referring to the big boys though like Instragram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc....

It's absolutely part of my buying process. How else can you see real life images of a particular hard to get watch? Come on people, it's 2019.

Nope but I'm still fairly new to the hobby. I found the model I liked, purchased it, and then discovered a bunch of Instagram pages afterwards.

I still like to think that I'm above the hype train
