Will you enjoy the Explorer or are you just getting it because you can't get a GMT? Also since it's supposed to be a gift from your wife, ask her, I think she should have a say in what she gifts you. If you both decide it's a good idea to go for Explorer, go for it. Otherwise, wait.

If you can swing it, get both

Buy the Explorer now and have immediate gratification...and buy the GMT when it becomes available for delayed gratification

The Explorer II is a classic. I’ve never had the 5 digit one, but I’ve had the 6-digit 42mm one on two separate occasions. I love the white dial and the blue lume. Although I have large wrists, 8 inches, I still like the 40 mm watches. I ended up with a 5-digit, TT GMT. Easier to find than SS.

Grey dealers are starting to ask more than the $8100 retail price. Most ADs that I’ve wandered into have them at list. Good luck.

You could pick up both for cheaper than 1 gmt master on the secondary market. I'd wait for the exp2 dial color you like best

As someone with both a vintage GMT and polar exp II, I find myself going for the explorer II much more. Definitely recommend you go in that direction.

The GMTII was my first purchased Rolex back in 2005 because it suited my career, Aviation! Last year, I purchased the EXPII polar dial. I have grown quite fond of it and wear it as much as the GMT. I don’t think you could go wrong with either watches. Have fun choosing.

Don't settle. That's my advice. In my opinion, the ExII is a wonderful watch.

Nah, pretty honest with myself. If anything I’d say the GMT hype is making me want it more.

If you got a chance to try on the Explorer and you like how it wore, I'd go with that. Have you been able to try on a GMT?

I dig the Polar but only the 5 digit. I assume you have tried the 6 digit on? That case is too bulky for me.

The 5 digit price has barely moved up over the last year or so, still a really good buy.

Both are beautiful watches. But as several others have said, it really comes down to which watch you really want - which sounds like the GMT.

The Explorer is fantastic, but will you regret not waiting on the GMT? Will you feel like you settled?

Personally, I think ExII is one of the most reasonable priced Rolex in these days. You got 42mm with a GMT function and slim case.
However, if you think GMT Master is your grail, wait for it and don't get distract by ExII. Or if you have some more cash to spend, get ExII now and when GMT arrived, you can sell ExII or keep them both

Both of these are great pieces, and the natural tendency in this community is to recommend both...But if that's not possible, definitely hold out for the one you really want, not the one that's easier to get. If you're not going to be adding for quite some time you should have the maximum enjoyment out of what you're buying. Good luck!

New Explorer II polar or GMT

Both lovely. I’ve just picked this beauty up and it’s such a refreshing change

Btw - I would make sure accepting the Explorer II today doesn't negatively impact your chances of getting a GMT in the near future. Last thing you want is the AD thinking he is doing you a "favor" by offering the Explorer II to you today just so you can get off his back about the GMT. I've recently seen Explorer IIs (both colors) in display cases back here in west LA.
This.
