You can't go wrong with either so having one of each in your collection would be the best compromise. Like you said they both have their pros and cons.

Some people think the 5 digit bracelets feel cheap and janky. Others appreciate how light and comfortable they are (me).

For me, the 6 digits just don’t look right proportionality. The thicker lugs and case design does not appeal to me. People can rationalize that it’s better with the new bracelet clasp, but once you get a 5 digit bracelet sized and on the wrist, it is very comfortable. It is interesting that it appears we are seeing of these types of posts and I wonder if this would be the case if there was not a supply shortage.

IMO the 5 digit is more comfortable and a superior design.

The 6 digit is just a jewelry piece. I would dump the 6 digit in a heartbeat.

YMMV

it’s a difficult decision which to have. as prices have gotten crazier whereby 5 digits and 6 digits are on par, I would opt for the newer references.

taking cost out the equation I would pick 5 digits every time.

my collection of 5 digits...

Went from 6 digit SubC that had been sat in a draw ,& hardly worn for nearly two years to this . And would do it again without any regrets , & not just because it's a LV . I prefer the 5 digit case over the 6 digit .

for the most part IMO, this is a no right or wrong situation, just preference. However, I feel STRONGLY that the 5 digit bracelets are far inferior. Otherwise, both time periods are exceptional.

My preference is for the 6 digits in almost every regard.

Chad with regards to the bracelets and clasps, I would go as far as saying they were one of the poorest out there. But now, the bracelet and clasp on the 126660 is an absolute marvel of engineering.

I continue to struggle in deciding between the two GMT series.

I like the 5 digit classic proportions, brushed bracelet and bezel options. It feels/looks like a true, working "tool" watch, if you will. The bracelet itself, though feels cheap/uninspired compared to the 6 digit.

The 6 digit case feels way more substantial, as does the bracelet. But the whole seems to be more flashy jewelry (PCLs, blocky case) than a working man's piece. Likewise the "cartoonish" size/font of the ceramic bezel numbers are just not attractive to me.

I love my 5 digit Sub, tried a 6 digit and now would never consider changing!

Love the look of the SubC, but my wrist just couldn't pull off the boxy case.

Although I do miss the glossy ceramic bezel and the maxi dial, other than that, absolutely no regrets switching to a 5 digit.

It just looks and feels better on my small wrists.

This is my fear. I absolutely love how ceramic looks. Think I may miss it more then I’d appreciate the proportions on the 5dig.

Just I need to add 5dig coke at some point.

I like 4,5 & 6 digits for different reasons ..

It's very difficult to choose

But I'd probably say the 5 digit wins for the beautiful case shape & lugs.

The 6 digit would have been better if they had just gone to 42mm and slimmed the lugs down to flow with the bracelet .. a bit like the SD43

Also, as much as I appreciate the new bracelet and glidelock .. I actually find them less comfortable than the old bracelet. The clasp feels too large, bulky & restrictive ...

My daily is either a 1680 or a 16600. The 6 digit has stayed in the box for a long time.

I remember finally securing the funds for my first in early 2011 and wondering with shock and amazement what had happened to the Submariner and GMT. I still wonder to this day actually. I never needed to make the switch. Thankfully.

I prefer wearing my Kermit to my Hulk. The 6-digit bracelet is miles better, but there's no getting around the fact that its case looks and feels like a giant hunk of steel compared to the older references.

For me, the sweet spot is 5 digit with SEL and holes cases, superluminova; it combines the classic lugs and aluminum bezel look and modern reliability. I have never had a hollow end link model so can’t say for sure, but I feel it might just be a little too flimsy. Hollow centre links and the old clasp never bother me, even though my first Rolex was a deepsea, and I loved that glidelock which I consider the best of all because you can adjust it on the wrist without removing the watch. However I just sold my 16600 SD in favour of a 116600, reason being that I love the fully graduated bezel and any glidelock is better than none because my wrist seems to change a lot, and I live in Canada with serious temp changes. The 116600 doesn’t have the overly thick lugs which I would personally avoid. If you’re lucky enough to have a few I think 5 digit is what I would have more of, but 1 or 2 6 digits would be a good addition because they are fancier looking for when you want something a little more special looking; the ceramic bezels also make it look new longer and they have several worthwhile upgrades - parashock, chromalite, glidelock lock etc. I keep a 16570 black dial for under the radar look, 16710 Pepsi for classic style and 116600 for something a bit fancier with all the upgrades. Would have loved to keep the 16600 too though! Can’t have it all and no Rolex is ever perfect to me, they make you buy lots of them LOL

Anyone switch from 6dig to 5dig? Any Regrets?

I’ll preface by saying I like both the 5-digit and 6-digit references, though I started with the 6-digits.

I recently migrated from a 116710LN to a 16570. I’m keeping both of them though, will likely make the 16570 my summer-ish watch (wearing short sleeves) and the 116710LN in the colder months.

The 5-digit cases are awesome. The thinner profile and smaller round indices points to an elegant design. On the other hand, the bracelet, while many swear by it, doesn’t compare to those found in the 6-digit regencies IMHO, especially if you started from there. The only downside with the modern bracelets is the extra heft (though many will say that’s a plus).

So I’d say that if you’re just keeping one, get the 5-digit case mated with a 6-digit bracelet.

Or better yet, grab one of each. That’s what I did with the 116710LN and 16570!

I have 4, 5 and 6 digit subs and a few 5/6 digit Exp II, 5 digit gmt, they’re all their own style and look. I wouldn’t switch nor make a preference to be honest, they’re all a product of their era in time.

I do appreciate this perspective and completely agree! The wife thinks I am nuts that I have a Sub and BB58. I won’t even ask which I should wear when I go out cause.. she rolls her eyes lol! But they are completely different IMO.

Still given your perspective, say you can only keep one... 5 dig comfort, better proportions, classic style or a 6dig modern, beautiful upgrades (ceramic bezel), heft and overall “improvements”. If you don’t mind, curious which you would choose.

I posted this a while ago and decided to stick it out with my 6dig. But always open to flipping SubC and 58 for a 16610 (middle ground of the two) and picking up something else like explorer.

If you are keeping the sub and want to add a 5 digit gmt seems to be no issue. The only thing I can think of would be the disappointment of the bracelet.

Now if you were trading the only way I would do it would be sell the sub c and then get a 16610lv with a spare black bezel and have the look of two watches.

That is really the only bonehead move I made in the watch world. 3 years ago before I got my Sub C (love it btw) I could have gotten a 16610lv on a glidelock for 7500. If I could do it again I would give up the ceramic bezel in a second.
