Visited Johnson Space Center today.... Omega all over the place!

I think it would be a great idea for Omega to sell the Speedmaster there. I know I would have bought one the first time I visited. Instead I went to AD, they were out of Speedmaster and a good sales guy moved me to a Rolex!

An important qualifier is "During EVA on the moon." And it still holds true.

I think a Bulova has been there too, worn under the space suit. Aldrin's Speedmaster was the first though.

IMO, I think it is true. "been ON the moon" (physically walking on it) and "been to the moon inside a space shuttle" is quite different

Several years ago, Bulova had an ad in Watchtime stating "In 1969, Buzz Aldrin made history, and we were there" using this photo:

conveniently cropping this out of the original photo:

Actually Bulova was aboard Apollo XI. As you may know, an EVA timer malfunctioned prompting Armstrong to leave his Speedy on board to function in its place. The malfunctioning timer: Bulova.

The ad prompted one WIS to create this:

Actually, David Scott wore his Waltham chrono on his Apollo 15 EVA as he noticed that the crystal on his Speedy Pro had fallen off. That is why the wording on the newer display backs is incorrect. The Speedy Pro was the first but not the only watch worn on the moon.

Doesn't anyone find it sad that they are using a 40+ year old story...

Does anyone buy a watch because a speedy was worn on the moon 40 years ago....

That they played a part (albeit a very small one) in the greatest event of human history? Yeah, I reckon that's probably a factor.

Can't really tell if you were being sarcastic?

Yes.
Same with people buying Sub because James Bond wore it in the movie once (or twice..)

Well, why does anyone buy any luxury watch? It plays a massive part, no other watch has ever achieved so much - people harp on about history and continuity with a lot of Rolex models, yet the Speedmaster Pro you can buy today is pretty much identical to that worn on the Moon. The modern Sub and the original Sub are apples and oranges by comparison.

The fact that the Speedmaster is incredibly comfortable, low profile, and has one of the cleanest and most legible dials on a chronograph do help, but as a sales pitch, it's pretty compelling

They dont. All Speedmasters were purchased. Also why is it Johnsons job to care about gonzo watches that might or might not have been on the moon? They only care about what is issued and qualified, the rest dont even exist to them or the mission. I love that the individual guys loved to wear their GMTs and other makes but to NASA they were not part of the mission.

Of course it plays a part. A mechanical watch is an anachronism in this age. The history of the watches is a part of the emotion that makes them interesting. There are at least 30 members at TRF with a name and/or avatar with James
Bond because the old connection to Rolex.

Sure Omega has expoited the moon/space angle a bit too much. But the moon watch is legendary, in a way few other watches are.

Took this photo of my speedy and Gene's speedy at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. Sorry for the poor phone quality photo.

Omega pays NASA big money for the advertising. Not sure if you've been to the space center but they have Speedmaster clocks all over the place.

Also per an interview on Jakes Rolex Blog with a Rolex ex-employee, the whole story about going to a jeweler in Houston and buying the watches and Omega the only one passing the tests is untrue. According to him word in the industry back then was that Omega payed NASA to use Omega watches.

People still talk about someone carrying, not wearing, a Rolex to the top of a mountain. I suspect that being worn on the moon is somewhat more impressive.

As I understand the story, Aldrin's watch was supposed to go to the Smithsnian but supposedly never made it. Has anyone ever heard any 'reliable' stories about what may have actually happened to it?

I always figured Buzz just decided to keep it for himself. Believe I would have.

It was stolen from his hotel room, never recovered.

In part, yes. My preference is the Speedy 9300.
