Haha in life you have to pick your battles.

These days I'm just surprised when a nickname isn't degrading and insulting.

If someone says "nice Rolie" to me I'm gonna say "thanks", Opposed to "No you peasant, it's called a Rolex and learn about them before you talk to me because I don't cohort with amateur horologists".

Other than on the forum (and music) I don't think I've ever heard them referred to as "Rollie's"

Good point, I certainly wouldn't correct someone for saying "nice Rollie". I would be appreciative and thank them. I wouldn't correct anyone for saying "Rollie" for that matter. As I said before I'm not saying you are right or wrong in the way you call a Rolex, a "Rolex". It's has been interesting reading the reactions, seems about 50-50...

None of my friends or family own a Rolex, so not an issue for me. I'm the only one with good watch taste (WIS) in my family.

Nope. I guess it's no different than someone calling their Cadillac a Caddy or their BMW a Beemer. It's just another slang word for another product. Heck most people I know personally that have one don't even talk about their watch at all.

While I don't use words like Rollie, Platty, Subby or Bluesy I can't say it really bothers me if someone calls his Rolex like that. Whatever floats your boat!

When I was a young guy I smoked "rollies" - cigarettes you rolled yourself from a pouch of tobacco with a cigarette paper. It makes me smile when I hear the word "rollie".
If someone referred to their Rolex as a 'rollie' I would think they might be being a little pretentious - Most Rolex owners I know refer to their specific model - e.g. GMT or 16040.
If a non-owner referred to my Rolex as a 'rollie' I would think he was a bit of a goose.

In response, musicians came out and said "Urban youth, don't wear Timbo's" (also known as Timberland's). A few weeks later, Timberland committed to a massive campaign saying that their boots were for all .

In the end, its all about money.
It's a juvenile slang, and now partially promoted by consumerism. The word doesn't bother me, but I won't be using it.

I personally think it sounds silly and don't use the term, but I wouldn't rain on someone else's parade if they like to say it.

When I see some "kid" wearing one calling it a Rollie and bragging about it to his friends it makes me sick. Did you buy it for you or did you buy it to impress everyone else? It is sad today that most buy a Rolex to impress others and it is not the brand it once was. They once were purchased as gifts for loved ones when they hit milestones that they could be proud of. A great watch that would last longer than them. Something that they would love and cherish, but would never spend the money on themselves. Now Rolex is purchased to show off to everyone, it has become a status symbol, not a crown for every achievement.
it is just another negative connotation associated with Rolex depending on where you are coming from. Some don't even view it as negative. You can thank rap songs for this one. But where some hate it when they hear it, others love it because it lets them associate with the "famous" people who talk about them in this way. It is the younger crowd who call them this from what I have seen. It helps them to feel as though they have "made it". To me this is just another "knock" on what Rolex is becoming as opposed to what they were perceived as decades ago. Pop culture, for good or bad, makes and breaks some companies. In this case I think it is what made Rolex into what it is today.A mass-produced luxury watch that prouds themselves in using some of the most advanced autmated manufacturing techniques and process in the world, and using vertical integration to produce all the parts themselves, including alloys etc. But this has taken away from what they used to be, and you can see it in the new products they are producing. Now it is just, let's get as many Rolex watches out there in the world as possible, regardless of quality and prestige. What was once a very prestigious time piece that you could feel proud to wear and call a Rolex, has now become a "rollie" that you can spot at any gym from a college guy trying to show off, and to make it worse you won't see it on the wrist for fear it may be damaged by the massive work out.Or another post on here asking " is it okay to wear my rollie to........"
Quick story about this topic as it happened to me not to long ago.
I was in the local AD a few months back and a younger sales associate saw my Rolex on and said to me: "Hello sir, nice rolie you have there". His manager (older gentleman) quickly pulled him aside and told him "Do not let me hear you use the word rolie in this store again, they are Rolex and should be treated as such."
The younger associate looked stunned like he had no clue he had done anything wrong.

I never heard anyone refer to a Rolex except
as a Rolex. That said , the term "Rollie"
is pretty snotty and obnoxious. Just my two
cents......
