Local AD has been completely unproductive for any model i've wanted, even when being #1 on 'their' list SS SkyD Blue last year. So yes i would and did pay over msrp elsewhere.

Nope, not my money. The closet I've paid to MSRP was 7% off last nov. for a SubC at my AD but I'm not in the market for one of the hot three.

If I was asked the same question a year ago, my answer would have been a big no.
Looking at the market today it all depends on how much over MSRP. I'd we willing to go 10%-20% or even 30% depending on the watch.

I've seen watches displayed @ grey dealers in London with a 90% premium over the list price. I don't think I would ever pay such premiums.

Yes 90%, seen a Daytona C with an asking price of over £17,000 (gbp). List price in the UK is £9,100 (inc. Tax).

I’ve purchased from Greys several times.....and paid less than MSRP + tax. Of course, the Daytona C does not fit into that category....but if I figure how much I saved on the other watches less the amount I paid over cost + tax on the DaytonaC.....I don’t feel so bad....and I’m enjoying my Daytona C.

Opportunity cost.

I don't want to....but the truth is, if you want a desirable SS model, there is no other way at this point to get that watch you want other than being put on a "list" which probably means you won't have the watch you want for months, to years, if you ever get it.

Gone are the days you could walk in, drop $9k for a SS watch and walk out of the store with it.

I have and the main reason is I don’t have the purchase history to buy a high demand in SS from an AD without having to wait a year plus. For me, I simply didn’t want to wait that long and so I paid over msrp.

Thanks for posting and very well said. Lists seem to mean nada, zero, zilch... that's my experience.

It’s all give and take from grey dealers as well. You pay more for a hot hot SS model but pay way less for a brand new not so hot model as well. So I’m the end it all balances out. For example, you can probably find a new platona for 20k less than MSRP with greys then you spend that on a daytonaC.

I never have, in fact just thinking about it I have never yet paid retail either, but in theory I would as retail is just a guideline price. I know the market very well now so I can ascertain what is a fair market price - given grey pricing, overall demand, waiting times, and my own impatience as I get older. So factoring all those in I would probably pay a bit over retail to get a watch I really loved now.

Generally speaking No. But maybe I should if it's not too much a premium. Just to avoid the hassle of playing AD's "games". Or even better, just look for another brand/watch to buy. Not quite sure why all the craze suddenly about Rolex SS sports watch. Most of them are still the same exact watch that is in Rolex's catalog for years.

Absolutely. Wouldn't even think twice about it...if I wanted it.

But, my circumstances are a little different. My AD lost their status last year, so if I want any watch, chances are I'll be looking at our trusted sellers, and if it happens to be one of the "premiums," well...that's just the cost of doing business.

I have, a couple hundred bucks, no more.

Certainly less than sales tax if I were to walk in and buy at the local AD.

No.

There are many other things I would like to buy in the lifestyle arena that are not stupidly overpriced.

I collect other things beside watches, and my experience over the years is that ridiculous prices fall back to Earth.

Normally I would say no way. Then the infatuation came on to buy what I want when I want it. I opened my wallet and paid up. Now I can relax and enjoy them vs the hunt for the best deal. My time is valuable and I spent way too much time already.
