Ceramic & crystal chipped on new watch -grrrr!

I would consider myself careful with my watches, but on my hols I managed to put a small pin head size chip in both the crystal and the ceramic bezel of my four month old Daytona – and have no idea how I did it.

This is doubly annoying as my 18 month old Sub also has a tiny pinhead chip in the bezel!! (that I knew when and how)

I am in the camp of wear and enjoy your watch and try to live with the resulting dings and scratches.
At the moment though, I am annoyed/upset and trying to make myself realize that ‘these things happen’ and it can be sorted at service time in the future!

I must confess - I know ceramic can shatter/is harder to scratch, but am surprised it can chip so easily.

Not actually glass (which is an amorphous solid), but crystal is crystalline. But all are hard, brittle materials so are prone to fracture if you hit them hard enough.

Wow. I'd have to send that in for the crystal. The ceramic I could live with.

That would annoy me too much, I’d get it repaired! Annoying it happened, but at least it was a good holiday and either way you still have a beauty of a Daytona so things aren’t bad ;)

Clearly somehow you banged it hard without you knowing. No matter how careful you are. And since it’s happened a couple of times - there’s something that you are doing that’s different.

Something sharp because the impact to the crystal doesn’t look like a scratch.

I’ve worn ceramic Rolexes for years. All sorts of conditions and activities including camping, working out, gym, pool, travel, moving and never had scratch (knock on wood )

Contact your insurance company and have them pay for the repair.

That crystal and bezel looks like rock chips imo. Where you doing yard work in your Daytona i.e...weed trimmer?

At the end of the day - ceramic is quite brittle - especially in watch bezels - based on its circular design — as it is ‘hollow’ - all it is essentially is clay - or could be several other non-metallic materials compounded using high heat or compression. No where near as durable as metal - but has many redeeming qualities that metal does not. (I.e antimagnetic)

Sapphire crystals - chip EASILY - just as any crystal or glass would if ‘hit’ just right.

Personally I’d leave it alone until you want to service the watch - you’ll get used to it. And eventually won’t even see it.

Wow. Did your wife hit your wrist with her ring? Usually that can cause that sort of damage without you noticing.

I’d send it in.

I really have no idea - I didn't feel any impact - but went to the spa that day - so could have been knocked on rock - may blame the Mrs and her ring!

I was going to try and live with it and won't claim on my home insurance (but it did happen on my hols so may investigate travel insurance)

I'm guessing it would be a £1000 (ish) job for RSC?

I could live with the bezel bash, though it would annoy me. But that crystal would need to be replaced if it was my watch. And since it's going in, might as well get the bezel done.

I have some scuffs in my 116710 LN's bezel as well. A few months ago it was at the Pennsylvania RSC. They recommended swapping it out and I opted to keep it. I want to see how it ages just for fun and don't see the need to wast a hundred plus on cosmetic "imperfections." I know it's a drag but I'm also of the wait for service camp. You're just going to swing it into more things. Beautiful watch.

There is a hole in the glass = air, contaminants, problems.

Oil oxidizes in air. Air pollutants will affect hands, dial etc.

Humidity will wreck the watch.

Take it for crystal change asap

Your wife has good aim; she sounds like a keeper. Sorry to hear about the damage. It will cost a fair amount to repair both!!!

I’d fix it for sure. Since it’s not warranty work I’d go independent as it’s probably cheaper and quicker turn around.

I would send it in and wear sweaters all year long if I were you. You have a history of chipping hard to chip watches.

That’s the advantage of a steel bezel. You just live with the dents. Your ceramic might need replacing, which has a cost.

It looks like you have a whole in the glass.....If I were you I would run to the service center to put a new crystal. It costs around 200usd.

Dust, water or just moisture will get inside rather fast and the watch will be ruined.
