I’m happy for you. Saying it was a steal doesn’t mean I would have bid on it. Enjoy!

Understand and agree. On auctions you have to bid, that’s the truth ;-)
I watched it and was shocked about the result, but was to late at this time. But thats behind, now I’m super happy

Thanks for sharing pics. Great history, but the engraving on the case is too personal of a touch IMO. Otherwise, excellent purchase.

I missed this by a few months: Nearly a year! Ha! But...

Scratches and dings are supposed to add character and be "cherished" among us comfortable/vintage collectors, right?

If that is really the case, then who is to fault the owner, for whom tomorrow was clearly not assured, for engraving/"scratching" it to suit his purposes? A testament to the hazards of selfless service under arms and exceedingly cool, by my humble assessment, if not to everybody's select sensibilities.

Thank you for your service, good sergeant!

There is a vast difference between a military watch collector and a "collector". Most military Rolex collectors want to see provenance, after that it is subjective. As the original owner of a combat MACVSOG 1680 Red Submariner, the value exceeds well
beyond milsubs. Seal team members were issued Tudor Submariners by the Navy.
Most 5th Special Forces Gp(ABN) preferred individual purchase of Rolex references to issue
GI watches or Seiko versions.
Most of my fellow Green Berets in Vietnam purchased
Rolex Submariner or GMT watches. In the mid to late 1960s, many ref 5512 and 5513
series were purchased by 5th Group members because of their toughness as tool watches. The prices in Hong Kong at the China Fleet Club were a bit cheaper than in
the AAFES/PACEX exchanges.

This GMT would go well next to my SAS beret exchanged for one of mine at Hereford.
Also was a guest at Williamtown, NSW with the lads.

Couldn't resist piping in here since I have a similar story. I was SF qualified but ended up in a leg outfit (1st Cav) two weeks after the "Cambodian incursion" in 1970. "Needs of the service," you know, with a 1542 basic MOS (infantry). SF was secondary.

In that year a GMT listed for $255 stateside and cost $180 at the Exchanges in Viet Nam. I bought mine for $139 at the China Fleet Club in Jan. 1971, and at the time my intent was to buy a watch that would last my lifetime. It has fulfilled that goal so far and will continue to, I'm sure, and although I almost never removed the watch from my wrist for the first 40 years I rarely wear it now. I etched my name and date on the back soon after purchase, at the time not considering any collector repercussions decades later, but I'm not sorry I did it. Anyway, I'll certainly never sell it.

It has the original Mark 1 "Long E" dial, hands, date wheel, and FF bezel with a proper 7836 bracelet with 280 end links and a clasp dated 4-70. Still have all original paperwork, boxes, etc. and have enjoyed watching its value skyrocket from its original $139 purchase price. Should've bought a Daytona with exotic dial (Newman) in addition to the GMT, but it wasn't waterproof or self-winding so it wasn't even considered. Also, the solid gold GMT was ~$460 at the CFC, but hindsight is 20-20.

Seems we came close to crossing paths. I had a Force Recon Marine friend who had told me about the China Fleet Club. He had a ref 5513 Submariner. I bought my 1969 dated Red 1680 Submariner there in October of 1971. I also purchased a 5512 no date. The 1680 was $165 by then, but that included
4 extra crystals and extra spring bars. The extra pins rested in a C-rat P-38 small paper
cover for 45 years. My Submariner 1680 was also scroll engraved with De Oppresso Liber name and SSAN-just enough to keep it non-sterile for Laos operations out of Khe Sanh. In addition to a Kar 15, 1911 and Randall knife-I carried a 2 in S&W 38 in my back pocket because of the possibility of capture. Lots of M-26 frags.
Remember the luminous hands seeming to be too bright in deep bush at night.
Seems a long time ago, but the toughness of the Rolex watch breeds loyalty
to the maker. I would not consider another marque for salt water serious diving
or exposure to the SF Combat Diver Course at Key West. A 31542 U of A graduate:
10th, 7th, 5th SFG(ABN) and MACVSOG-CCN/SMAG.
