I believe the Auction house was very skillful in marketing that watch. Many, many, VN veterans purchased the GMT or Sub at a PX (Post Exchange) during that time period. There are thousands out there. PX prices were in the $225-$275 price range depending on the year. I can think of at least 5 other guys I still know that have theirs.

Agree. Honestly it's "cool" and all, but it's beat up, the original band is gone, he wasn't famous, so unless he was in my family tree I wouldn't pay over $4k US for it.
Now if he had notched verified kills in it...

Ex-Aussie SAS Vietnam vet......given their reputation in theatre, probably not enough space on the case to do that.

Cool watch, cool story, and a perfect example of when people saw such a Rolex as a tough tool watch rather than an bling investment piece of jewellery.

Full kit and great story...I think the watch was bargain! Case is certainly unique, but far from mundane!

We understand why he did that. We also understand that aside from any sentimental value to the gentleman who did the “engraving” that there is zero value added to anyone else not related to him. Furthermore, a whole lot of value has been removed from the watch with the bery unpleasing engraving.

That watch should be in the hands of the family, other then sentimental value, no interest. Cool story though.

It’s not the first time and won’t be the last where a ‘war’ story has been used to bid up the value.
The engraving means nothing to anyone except the owner and the family and regards the provenance it gives the piece, doesn’t even mean to say the watch went to war, it’s also utterly ruined the case and to my eye what the watch is worth.
The fact someone was stupid enough to pay $10k for it comes down to clever marketing.

Interesting how different the opinions are, but that's what makes it so interesting in a forum like this here.

Go on guys...

Great comments on this thread, agree with most of them, highly rare pice of history and a fantastic conditioned watch on top!

The story of this watch goes on, stay tuned for more soon...

Love the story behind it, you can almost imagine the moment he was just hacking away at the case, everyone has their own opinion you either like it or you dont xD , mine would be i love the whole story behind the watch, the intent behind the engraving, i mean back then who would care about wearing some bling bling, that watch has been through a heck of a lot and seen a lots of things

Just my two cents though, i like this :)

I agree with both perspectives here. It’s cool to have the period engraving. It pulls you into the moment when this was a bad ass tool on the wrist of a bad ass soldier that terrible war.

At the same time, a a time piece, I think it’s trashed. It’s an interesting memento, but I’d think more valuables a military collector than a watch enthusiast.

What I can’t understand is why he would carve it in on both SIDES of the case. Okay, maybe the case back if you are worried about needing to ID it, but the sides also? I can’t see a rational reason for that...

Now that's unpolished! Personally, I like the history and agree the seller would have done better at one of the larger auction houses.

Agree, totaly wrong Auctionhouse. This watch at Phillips in one of the big auctions would be a star.

But, as also saied, its an unpolished case, watch tells it story, this is what I like and, on top with original papers.

Watch will pop up soon ;-)

My GMT turns 50 years old this year...

It was my dads..

He wasn't SAS but he was 17 years in the Royal Corps of Signals, British Army..

He told me GMT's and Subs were very popular with servicemen..
