You need to get a decent quality spring bar removal tool. There is no substitute for the correct tool.
I use the bergeon 6767-F though I understand the Seadweller tool is also suitable for removing the new GMT's springbar. You will also beed to mask the surrounding area to reduce the possibilty of scratching the case/bracelet.

My AD watch maker used a "tweezer" looking tool to remove that bracelet of my GMT IIc. He said it was a tool from Rolex. The bracelet went off in a giffy, but he managed to make marks on the OVERside of the lugs at the edge to the SEL! But he removed the scratched afterwards so no harm done. So I will second Paul's advice and mask up the lugs.
BTW: Bill, did you ever get a silver dial for your DD?

Mask the lugs on the case with clear scotch tape. Then, you can use a push pin (the one you would use to pin pictures on the wall, they come in a box with different colors) to remove the bracelet spring bars. Easy as that.

Bill,
I have a bergeon 6111 spring bar tool you can use anytime you happen to be in Tampa, or I could mail it to you. Now lets see some pics! Sean
