Watches without boxes and papers

Hi All !

It seems you read about Rolex watches all the time with no box or papers. It seems we are all enthusiasts around here and treasure every item, wrapper, tag and box that comes with our watches.

How do you figure so many watches seem to find their way out there alone without the other "goodies" ? I'm sure there are a million reasons, but it always makes you wonder.

Maybe people lost the boxes and papers or bought the watch without the goodies intially. I want the whole package.

Hi there,
i also lost a box one time because i had to put it in my main luggage for check in the airplane. The bloody airline lost my luggage and so i was missing my box, but i still have the papers.

Got a GMT master from my fathers estate, no box no papers, just the watch and some old parts from when it was serviced. I think the box was lost over 30 years ago, my father never saved box's.

When i was choosing a DateJust recently i thought about this a lot.It seemed the watches that were in mint condition had no original box or documentation, and the ones that were slightly worn looking came with everything.

Simple, the older the watch... chance is you wil not find the box or papers, my glasses, my pen, my lighter, my letter opener, my car keys...there is a daily battle to remember where the hell have I left them....Can you imagine with a couple of moves and 20 years later how immensly difficult it will be to have or find the original box and papers..???
Some need box and papers for collectionism, some for security, some for increased value, they are all right, personally I go for the WATCH
give me today a 6239 Newman with a white dial and I honestly do not care about box or papers.

I've pointed this out in previous threads. In the 1960's Rolexes didn't automatically come with boxes - you had to pay (significantly) extra for a box and as most people were buying a watch just to wear and tell the time by, rather than as an investment, they chose not to get a box. I didn't get a box with my 1675 GMT when I bought it in 1967 and I don't regret it - I still wear the watch daily and the box would never have been used, to date. I did get all the papers with my GMT, however, and I've added to these over the years with servicing reciepts - so I've now got a file-full of stuff.

Stan.

Box and papers are nice but not essential IMO. What is much more important is WHERE YOU BUY THE WATCH. If the source is impeccable you're fine. Larry.

In the "Rolex tool watch days", many owners could't care less about box and papers. For them, box and paper were just..........well, box and papers! Main thing for them was the watch! But some owners of today also don't give the box and papers much worth, especially if the owner intends to keep the watch. Sometimes, papers and boxes also get lost when moving to another place.

And box and papers ARE not that important. As long as you know the watch is genuine and not stolen, don't hesitate buying a watch without papers and box since RSC service will give you service papers after service that are as good as the certificate, and the box can be bought later on.

It is just packaging, not worth anything but it does add to the over all feel of the purchase.

There's another possibility - the watch is stolen...
