I’ll have to search for a pic but we had an ‘05 TJ (in 2010) that we used when we lived in Albuquerque. Perfect place for one. 300+ days of sun per year, desert, mountains, road runners, the whole bit. Solid Jeep country.

Nice folks. Have a 2012 in Orange Crush soft top. I'll try to get a picture up later. It's our fun 3rd car for summer cruises.

Funny, this is what I have been thinking about to get my son as his firstcar. Looking for something used, maybe 10 yrs old. I want something rugged and tough that can take a $hit kicking for a teenage boy.

Wrangler is definitely good choice for a first car

Hey Nick just be mindful that handling dynamics on dual straight axle vehicles are much different than anything with independent front suspension. If you go with a Wrangler you’ll have to teach him how to drive it correctly because I’ve seen lots of young people take corners too hot in these and crash them. If he has the speed demon bug like his parents (side eye to your prancing horse and your wifey’s hellcat ) maybe a 4Runner would be a better choice since they are still very rugged but handle better on pavement due to the IFS.

It was covered above but a 10 year old Wrangler has several issues:
* susceptible to roll-over and generally poor handling - bad for collision avoidance and bad in case of a collision
* heck, some teen in my neighborhood managed to roll their MY19 car and our neighborhood speed limit is 25…
* less general safety / impact protection due to its structural compromises
* setup for “less than ideal” use… great party car but teens don’t need help making any car a party car

I like Wranglers but they are near bottom on my list for when my kids are driving age.

BTW, for context I am not risk averse with my cars…one of my favorite cars in my (modest) collection is almost as notorious as they come and I have two cars that Jeremy Clarkson has called out as trying to “kill him”… and I used to track a Boxster S.

Owned an FJ as well and while better than a wrangler, it still would be lower on my list… though a LOT higher than the Wrangler.

I second this. The brakes were complete garbage on a 4xE that we rented & I thought rear visibility was quite poor.

Get him an old YJ. I had a ‘91 with the 4 cylinder and a 5 speed on 35’s when I was 18-20 yrs old. I couldn’t think of a better vehicle for a young man. It is simple to work on and make his own relatively cheap. It won’t be fast enough for him to get himself in trouble and chicks will dig it. Some of my best vehicle memories were made in that Jeep.

Thanks for the debate on the first car purchase folks. All excellent points and very valid reasons. I may have to give this more thought definitely. In general, I do not want to buy the kid any car at 16, but giving him the keys to any of the cars at home is a big no-no. Other than that, he will have to drive one of my pickup trucks which are used daily. If I am thinking out loud, if my wife were to read the comments about a Jeep as a first vehicle here, she would squash the plan I had in mind. So, the dream may have ended LoL.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread, but these examples in the pictures above are amazing, the beauty of this vehicle, is they can all be so personalized and not look like anyone else's.

Smart decision. Again, I am a fan of the Wrangler (despite owning an FJ for years) but as a first car, based on my priorities - no way.

I’ll admit I was tempted by the PHEV as here in the states it came with a $7500 tax credit! But alas the sweet song of the 392 hemi was too alluring. My son was wholesale convinced that it was in fact a monster truck. The entry price alone was justifiable by the cold start soundtrack even if you can have the same motor in cars for half the price.

Miss my 2 door JK. Hard to believe I special ordered that for the mid-20s. My boss bought one of the newer 4 doors and it was into the 50s. That's wild.

100% The 392 is the way to go in this vehicle. That coming from a green lefty to the north
