Icon5 Terrarium owners?

Researching to possibly get 2 turtles or 1 lizard.

Was told they can get filthy and a pain to clean.

Any experiences or advice?

I would recommend against turtles...I had red eared sliders as a kid and the tank stunk all the time.

Yup, we had them as well and that was smell you want in your house.

If you decide to get a turtle, be aware that you should most certainly wash your hands after handling the animal, especially if you are cleaning up its enclosure. Reptilian gut microflora composition includes bacteria that are pathogenic to many mammals.

Do you want a terrarium or just the animals? If you want a vivarium, start with just the plants and see if you enjoy tending it. If you don't enjoy the plants, you probably won't enjoy the animals.

I had a Bearded Dragon for many years. Fairly maintenance free, besides changing the water and daily feedings of carrots and dandelions. He also got fed a dozen crickets every few days.

They show zero affections, and basically just sit under the heat lamp, or if you put them outside in the sun they will get darker in color.

Easy pets, but equivalent to a rock

I had a crested gecko and ball python. Gave both of them away - too much work and they smell.

We actually have a turtle that's 47 years old! Diver Dan, the stinkpot turtle.

I've been cleaning his tank for 35 of those years. I do truly enjoy him! He's a very small type and grew only to about 3 1/2" diameter. It's a weekly sometimes bi weekly cleaning, nothing terrible.

Pass.

The recommended maintenance, considerations and overall turtle care is a bit much for a kid.

Appreciate the comments.
