I am in the market for a Rolex Explorer 214270. Which version would you recommend the Mark I version or the Mark II?

I’m very happy with my Mk1, and have no desire to have it changed to the Mk2 dial and hands at service time....however I suspect the majority prefer the Mk2, as it could be considered as truer to the Explorer’s design heritage. The Mk1 is a bit of an oddball in that regard in my opinion, and is more polarizing. I’d recommend going with the one you prefer.

I would go with the mk2 personally. The lumed 3-6-9 give it a more sporty appearance, and the hands are more proportionate in my opinion.
But go with the model you like the most :)

Obviously it’s all down to personal preference, but for me personally I was overjoyed when they introduced the “Mark II” in 2016. It addressed the issues that I had with the 214270, namely the t-rex hands and the un-lumed 3, 6 and 9. I had to buy one.

Very subjective question. Mark 1 all day. The gold numerals make it more dressy when needed, but it is still very obviously a sports watch. The T-Rex hands never bothered me personally. As archieluxury says, the mark 1s almost always tend to do better long term if you care about th investment piece of it. Notwithstanding the greatness of mk1, the mk2 is still perfect and better than 99.9% of watches out there. So you have a win win.

Mark 2 is awfully large on wrist even for a 7” size. The flat bezel is a real scratch magnet and is too flat. An Explorer is meant to be a stealth sport piece, Mark 2 is a disappointment.

Mark 1 is a classic. The 36mm case is simply spot on.

I totally agree with you that 36mm works better on the explorer, but you are probably referring to the 14270 and the 114270. The 214270 (both mk1 and mk2) are 39mm modern iterations.

The Explorer 214270 is a great watch.
I love my mk2, but would be also be happy to own a mk1.
It is really a matter of personal preference.

The 39mm mark 1 is the rarer model- sleeeper. . Made for 5 years only. As a collector piece - might go up in price more down the line.

Both are outstanding. IMHO they are identical but for the outside (lumes, hand size, the three gold indices). However, if you are going with the Mark 1 you will have to go "used/preowned" Mark 2 new or used. I have the Mark II. Go with the model you like. Just like your favor ice cream it is all subjective: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry etc. what do you prefer?

As an everyday tool watch I love my mkII & prefer it over the mkI. I will add a mkI later on for my collection down the line.
