At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see Basel canceled given the circumstances. I wouldn't fault them for being careful.

Strange times we're in. I hope this gets under control soon.

As long as we get the watches, not sure I really care much.

Better safe than sorry, and may give them an incentive to roll them out to boutiques quicker.

Oh man, that really sucks but it's totally understandable. I was really looking forward to seeing the new models they were going to release for the summit (even though I'd be traveling during that time and nowhere near a computer).

Off topic--but I really (perhaps naively) hope COVID-19 doesn't negatively affect the Tokyo Olympics this summer TOO much, though I'm guessing it probably will.

A couple of thoughts...Seiko could have salvaged their celebration via a global web stream from HQ. Seminars for paid attendees could also have been done via Zoom or another conferencing cloud service.

Second thought - these big events could avoid similar outcomes in 2021 by hosting them outside Winter dates. Perhaps move to early June.

Basel is a very different matter since the exhibitors are competitors. Streaming wouldn’t be scalable from each HQ but a few that have pulled out already could do it. If it is cancelled, the lost revenue might crater the show producers.

I work in the events industry and portfolio management tools specifically and I seeing lots of events being canceled...or better yet, postponed.

It’s best to be safe.

Streaming a launch like this wouldn’t have the same impact as the proper event itself. The expense and organisation to make it happen would be wasted as a result.

Early June doesn’t work for the industry – a number of brands dropped out of attending Baselworld this year because April was too late in the year to be showing new models, and would’ve had a negative impact upon production schedules.
Remember, the whole of the Swiss industry effectively shuts down for 6 weeks or so during July/August.

I wouldn't go to Baselworld at this point - why take the risk?

Probably the best and maybe last Basel to ever see at this point. Less people. Better tourist prices. Lower airfare hotels and if you're quarantined, they have chocolate and pilsener.

Wait a minute??? When's the GTG??

Makes sense. I would think if Basel gets cancelled it will be soon.

They do releases after Basel every year. Basel has never been their main platform to launch new watch models. So no loss there.
