There is speculation that he might have blacked, out, as he didn’t deploy the available backup parachutes.

Would’ve been cheaper and safer to buy an airline ticket and shoot pictures from a window seat.

He was only trying to go up 5,000 feet in his steam-powered rocket.
That's not very high.
Heck, hang gliders sometimes fly higher than that.

Thing is, a lot of the people who buy into these theories aren't doing it because they're anti-science, they're doing it because they believe they've been shown better, or even 'hidden' science. The Never-Went-to-the-Mooners, the Flat-Earthers and the Anti-Vaccers all think they're the enlightened ones on the subject. That they know the truth of things, and aren't being fooled by the powers that be manipulators. In that regard, they're really no different than the alternate JFK assassination folks.

This guy was full on crazy. He wanted to build a rocket to get himself to 5000 feet.
He could have chartered a helicopter and opened the door and looked out at twice that height.
He could have also gone all in and got special equipment and pilots to take him to 20000 ft or higher.
I don’t understand this kind of crazy.
He wanted to be a rocket man, not a flat earth scientist.

I'm not sure if I agree, Paul. The moon landing was in 1969, so not that long ago. I was born that same year and perhaps there are some who believe it was a made up story and I'm cool with that. It's their problem. On the other hand, immunization is a lot older. Our history of vaccines dates back to 1800 approximately so it's results are harder to question. However, flat earth is a whole different story. No reasonably educated sane person would question that.

At least he died for what he believed in ... Ok, maybe dying wasn't part of the plan.

Note for the next guy, shoot camera / robots / recording devices / whatever up in the sky instead of yourself. So that at the end of this experiment, you will be convinced that the Earth is not flat ...

Judging by how well buildt the parachute system was, where there any communications or black box. I'm sure someone wants to hear his last words.

Thanks for the tip. I couldn't find it on Netflix but I found one named 'Behind the Curve'. Holy mary this is real. People actually believe that kind of thing. Not sure what to say.

Well, I will say this. He died doing what he loved doing. We should all be so lucky.

I just don't want to die doing something stupid.

I'm not defending these theories. In fact, before putting it up, I deleted the word 'cockamamie' from my first post. Just making the point that many of the people who do buy in are doing so thinking they have evidence and science on their side. I don't agree with their arguments, but I recognize that they do.

I'm sure of that my friend.

They come up with a theory and find others to join no matter how crazy.

FWIW, this wasn't to "prove" flat earth. He said I want to see for himself

Hughes stated, "I'm not going to take anyone else's word for it, or NASA, or especially Elon Musk with SpaceX," he said. "I'm going to build my own rocket right here and I'm going to see it with my own eyes what shape this world we live on."

I believe the theory has become more popular of late based on the number of morons populating the blue marble now.
