Travel watch; take the Rolex or leave it in the vault and take a cheapo?

I’m leaving for a 10 day family vacation, out of the Country, and I’ve been debating with myself about taking anRolex (or two) or leaving them in the bank vault and wearing a cheap one or Apple Watch. I’m fearful that walking around with a Daytona or GMT or any high visibility wrist candy could attract the wrong people that ultimately mug me or steal it from a hotel. Yet, I’m also telling myself that if I won’t wear it outside of my cocoon, then why own it. Curious on anyone’s prior experiences, words of wisdom and thoughts.

I'd take a Rolex to Iceland, no problem.

I'd be more wary of someone stealing it thru the airport security in the US !!

FYI I have a travel case (watch pod) and before I go thru security, I placed my watch in the case and in my bag/backpack. I do that because one time I forgot my watch was on the bin in my haste that I pulled my jacket on which I laid my watch. The timepiece dropped on the floor, dinging the case. Just for your consideration if the airport transit is your concern.

Iceland is safe. Wear in the extremes - cold tundra and in the baths. You’ll have a story for us and your grandkids.

Cheers

The dodgiest bar in Iceland will probably be safer than your bank vault in the U.S.

Traveling to other non-developing world countries (where I'd feel obtuse wearing something of such value) I would always be reluctant to wear a Rolex due to the recognition the brand receives, however I still like to wear nice watches. Most other watches, except perhaps Royal Oaks and Nautiluses will not attract the attention of most people. For me, a Grand Seiko GMT is perfect for traveling. Real watch fans will strike up a conversation still, but everyone else will only see a Seiko. Useful complication, can straddle formal and casual occasions reasonable well, and has 100m water resistance meaning you don't have to take it off while swimming etc.

Enjoy your trip.

I would take the watch you like best. Especially in Iceland.
