Rolex Boxes - is it authentic?

Hey all,

I bought a Rolex Skydweller 1 year ago, and never thought at the time of the authenticity of the box (Not that I thought anything wrong of the box, just bought it from a reputable grey seller).
Not until recently, I bought a friend a Pepsi GMT II, (from a different grey seller) and then compared the 2 boxes.
I do not know if 2 different Rolex models may have different boxes, but just very curious when looking closely I see differences in the Rolex boxes.

Example:
1st box (on the left) = Skydweller
2nd box (on the right) = GMT

1. On 1st box, the feel on the top of the box feels more "leathery" feel, and the other 2nd box has more of a "plastic" feel and glossy look to it.

2. The color on both boxes has a slightly different tinge to it.

3. On the back of the box the writing is not levelled in regards of positioning.
The 2nd box seems more closer to the edge of the box

4. When opening both boxes, the 2nd box opens a bit more at the top of the box than the 1st box.

I've added also some other pictures of the boxes side by side comparison.

Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

If it's from grey, there really is no telling if the box is authentic or not. But honestly that isn't a big deal. The most important is the watch and the paper IMHO.

Agree.

Also, there are different boxes for different references (PM watches being most obvious), and I am guessing that not all of the boxes are manufactured in the exact same facility. If I'm correct with that guess, then it stands to reason that there would be some minor differences in the boxes.

As long as you know the watch itself is authentic, the box is a distant second (or third, possibly even fourth) in importance.

Like the dials there are always tiny differences in boxes over the years.

Since Rolex boxes are the worst in the price range don’t be bothered.
I even broke one because the plastic more or less glued together by itself and I could not open it anymore.
Modern Rolex boxes are not worthy of having the crown on them

Have to agree and now made in many parts of the world, its just a packaging box nothing more, and not the best box in the watch world thats for sure.

Damn right but then again some people believe that it "takes a year to make one Rolex" so they expect the box to magnificent

Box is crappy tbh. But it is just a box

Hilarious.

I remember my SA showing me where they kept "the boxes." Stuffed in a closet.

Hello, today. I saw the picture, but unfortunately the right side is a complete fake. The feature of the fake is that the wave pattern on the surface of the box is sloppy and self-contained. The border should be made of plastic. The real thing is different. In addition, the inner velvet fabric is hard to the touch. And the cushioning of the watch holder is also hard and hard to bend. I'm explaining it in my video. *It's Japanese!

I might be crazy but boxes and papers matter a ton to me. So much I buy only from an AD. The watches are a meaningful item I obtain and want to keep all of the original pieces that comes along with them.

Yes, you are not alone, I want them as well but remains that the boxes are really poorly made and Rolex unworthy imho

I'm not sure if this is an answer anyone can give you definitively because Rolex probably does not produce the box themselves, and they probably do not sole source them, as that would be a potential operational risk. Further, the materials used by the subcontractor (or the subcontractor's subcontractor(s)) may vary.

Exactly that and even the so called serial box numbers could be different depending on where box and county box was made. And lets be honest in the real world, the box is quite poor comparing to many other brands costing a lot less. But the main item is the watch quality its self one of the toughest accurate mechanical watches made today, and not the packaging stuff.
