at MSRP you've got potential upside on price if that matters and minimal downside.

Doubtful that Rolex will mismanage supply enough to trigger more than 10% discounts at ADs

Buy and enjoy

Exactly.

Best case scenario in the next 12-24 months you might save $1000. Buy it.

The most I ever got was 10%. I figure those days are over for the foreseeable future.

If it’s a matter of affordability, even 10 doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of a purchase.

This is your grail now. But honestly, there's always another grail. After this it's the GMT Pepsi, after that it's the Daytona steel, after that it's the blue skydweller, after that it's an AP RO, after that it's a blue 39mm AP RO, after that it's the patek nautilus, after that it's the 5726, after that it's the tiffany stamped... and on and on until you get to Paul Newman's own daytona... blah blah blah.

2. You don't want the watch, you want the idea of this watch
If your consideration is whether the watch's value will fall below MSRP. Then you don't really love this watch anyway, you love the money more. 3-4 years ago, every watch in the catalog was below retail except the daytona. Just strap the 106 $100 bills on your wrist. Or keep it in your pocket and take it out to the watch events and show them the money that you could have spent.

3. Why buy something that will lose value and you'll never get the true value of?
Prices are continuing to fall. When you buy it, yes maybe you'll be up but your margins will only shrink. And for what are you going to use this watch for? You're definitely not going diving with it. Maybe desk diving, dish diving, or diaper diving at most.

4. You might lose all of it.
This watch might get stolen. Someone might club you in the head to get it. Your gym locker might be broken into. If you never spent the money, you can't lose it right?

Anyway here's mine, dish diving. This is what divers are for.

First green subs may not have been discounted first year. But they were definitely discounted. Tax was covered + 10-20%. Discounts were always YMMV. Hulks were also discounted regularly.
I really don’t think there is going to be any Rolex SS sports model watches that could be bought at discount, unless there is like a nuclear war, which we will all be in trouble! Especially the LV, GMTs, Daytonas. It had been years like this now, regardless of the economy. I do think greys will continue to decline, but that is only because they are so high in recent years.

I assume, based on your 2013 join date, you've been around long enough to know the answer to this is to buy the watch

Congratulations!

Getting offered this watch and talking about the good ole days I assume you know a thing or 2 about the current Rolex market. Unless you work with the brand, most if not all of us on here can predict as much as yourself, in that we cant at all lol.

That all being said, you must know that we are several steps removed from seeing discounts at AD's specially for SS. First the secondary market would need to approach or go below MSRP (still hasn't happened for SS). Then you'd need the flippers/speculators to lose interest as even if AD's start to have difficulty selling to loyal customers, the remaining people on the list and flippers would snatch them up gladly at MSRP. Once that crowd is weeded through, you would need to start seeing "hot" pieces sitting in showrooms. Once they sit long enough then we will see any sort of discounting, but you would notice all of the steps above and see it coming long before needing to consult TRF.

Btw not pretending to be some in the know type as I have no clue if and when any of the above would happen. But if it is to happen, those are the things that would need to go down first.

The OP has money problems or is concerned in this economy to spend money for non-essentials. If spending the money will make you not sleep at night, then you have your answer. You could also tell the AD that you want the watch but the timing is off, could they still keep you on their list for a future arrival? You might have to wait a while but you will feel better about it.

Not to be rude…but…If you have to ask that question, you probably can’t afford it or are not in the proper cash position. Would never buy anything that I have to ask an online forum about. Cheers and hope it works out for you.

I don’t get it to be honest …. You like the watch or you like to buy whatever they have cheap ? So if that is the case don’t buy any watch and pass for another person to get the watch

Falling market? Rolex’s don’t go below retail. It’s like chasing a unicorn.
Buy the piece if you love it and thank your AD.

Interesting thread (if of arguably low value) WRT people's feelings on the WATCH, economy, value of money, etc.

I suspect many are old enough to remember when Rolex shelves were full and discounts were not unusual. Hasn't been that long. Many may go back far enough to recall when Rolex's were just a corner of large jewelers and most cost less than $1000.

I also recall that in 2008-09 as well as 2000-03 that guys who felt flush with cash, but likely had shaky balance sheets, were selling their Rolex's to pay for necessities like groceries and utilities.

Both of my long-passed grandfathers, who were millionaires when that meant something, always wore cheap-assed watches and kept their non-flashy cars for many years, and would have considered it a sin to buy a Rolex watch or a sports car, etc.

If the apocalypse happens or the nukes fly, people will trade them for a single meal. Just sayin'.

YMMV

get the watch. we won't be seeing AD's discounting rolex anytime soon, at least not for the next several years, as far as I'm concerned.

If you have to ask, pass it on to another buyer who will appreciate it as a watch, not an investment.

You probably spent however long complaining you couldn’t get one, now you can get it and you want a lower price? Buy it if you want it, or you might not get another chance.
