I would get the Sub if I already had another Rolex with a cyclops and the SubDate if I didn't (ie: I had an Explorer or an OP).

SD, Cyclops is a classic, original feature of Rolex, beginning in 1953-1954 with the Datejusts. They created the original patient for it which is long expired now. But hey, you see it and you immediately know you're dealing with a Rolex.

Personally, functionally having the date is convenient--I miss it on wristwatches when my timepiece does not have it typically. And the quickset function with the latest movement makes managing it a breeze if needed.

SD!

Sub date. I’ve got one and I love it!
You don’t realise how much you rely on the date window. Too good!!!

From a function perspective --
If you tend to look at your watch for the time, then sub date. If you tend to look more at your phone and just really wear your watch as "jewelry", then sub.

I always look at my watch for the time, and I've found the date conveniently helpful. Date and time just go hand in hand, and cyclops is easily the most distinguishable feature of a Rolex.

Can't really go wrong with either.

You can't tell the time from a watch with no date?

Aesthetically, I prefer the Sub and it's my favorite. I've owned quite a few.
For practicality, I prefer and buy the Sub Date. I look at the date so much during the day at work. When I wear a no date watch to work...50x a day I look at the watch for the date and say "ahh crap".

If they made the Sub (no date) with the green bezel I’d get it I’m a heartbeat. But alas, they don’t. So I wait for sub.

If, as you suggest, people that look more to their phone for time wear their watch as jewellery why would they not specifically go for the Submariner date? Surely the cyclops adds a bit more instant Rolex identification to the average person in the street?

Agreed. Unless you are actually going to dive a lot with it. You want the dial to be less busy and the most quickly readable possible

Always a sub date. Look, there will be a time when you need the date (maybe not until you retire-but I work with folks that are retired at times and they never remember the date unless its on their watch) and you have it. It increases functionality, and that's not a debate. The only real argument for no date is for fashion reasons and I don't wear my watches as jewelry I wear then to do what they were intended0tell the time, measure elapsed time and tell me the date.
