$35k - which used Patek?

Looking to spend around $35k on a used Patek. Want something that will hold its value. Quite like the 5205 but not sure will hold value and 5170 just out of range). Any thoughts?

5130 or 5230 World Time. Given the 5110’s are in the high 20s, the 5130 and 5220 should remain steadily in the 30s.

My first choice would also be the 3940. If World Timer I would go 5110 and not spend extra for a more recent, slightly bigger, but IMO less beautiful reference. Chances are higher that prices have bottomed out for the 3940 and 5110 compared to their successors and I find them prettier on top.

Depending on what you like you could also look at vintage Calatravas such as a 570G or 3466A or a modern platinum Calatrava like the rare 5107P.

5524G. You might need to spend a little more depending on where you are, but that was my choice in that range.

Not sure what the pre-owned market is for the Aquanaut, but a 5167A may have better value retention if that is your primary focus.

Pre-owned 5167 are selling for almost double the price of retail.

33k-39k , good choice , the problem is if it is pre-own be psychologically prepared to be ok with the swirls on the bezel.

I wouldn't pay nearly double MSRP for any current production Patek, certainly not for an Aqua. Are you looking to wear/enjoy or invest? Wear/enjoy, then a newer 5205R version or some of the other references suggested earlier. Invest, then MSFT or similar.

5524g, I am always tempted myself seeing you can get 35-38k. Really like this one.

Traditional Patek would make for a fine choice.
5130p would hold.its value well.
For more modern take on traditional Patek.complication
I would look at 5205g blue/black graduated dial..

5205 is my pick. If you have the chance, have a look at the case and the sculptured lugs at the AD. It's beautiful.

To me, a watch is to be enjoyed. I cant worry if it will hold value as well as some others, thats not the point of them. I really like wearing the 5205.

You have a point and that may well be a sound financial decision. But at the end of the day this is a watch, and on that score I think it's hard to say an Aqua looks like $35k - simply doesn't have that level of refinement, presence or gravitas. Current after-market pricing exuberance aside, there's a reason why its msrp is $23k.

My advice to the OP would be to consider a watch that punches above its weight, rather than one that prices above its weight.

or consider a brand new 5196G or R or J and start your collection with a Patek Classic...and have 10K to spare.

If you are inclined towards Patek sportier watches...then I'd suggest you wait a little for either the market or on a waitlist.

Where do you find these deals though? On TRF, chrono24, etc. it’s just the grays selling at their asking prices, no opportunities to buy at what they’re willing to pay for a piece.

People mention 3940.... That's definitely the way to go if you can find a nice one for that price.... Maybe a j if lucky but I don't think r's that are nice goes anywhere near that low....
