Why does he wear his watches this way? And working on projects?

Just a guess: Maybe he was in the military and is preserving that tradition. Military personnel have worn their watches on the inside of their wrist for quite some time.

He was not in the military. His watch wouldn't even keep time it was so beat to hell.

Looks like he got an update though.

He probably won’t tear the watch up anytime soon... I think he only does work here and there when they filmed the show. I’m sure he mostly supervises these days.

Wearing a watch on the inside of your wrist protects it from being accidentally hit against things better than wearing it on the outside of your wrist

Not necessarily. I have worn watches for a lot of years on the inside of my wrist and for some reason they took a ton abuse. Actually more than it being on the outside of my wrist. Maybe I am more careful with it on the outside of my wrist? I honestly don't know.

My granddad wears his watch this way. He was a corpsman in the Navy back during the Korean war. He told me he learned to wear his watch this way so he could time someone's pulse while holding their arm in his watch hand and feeling for the pulse with his strong hand.

My dad's worn every watch that way since I can remember. I got him a 14060 for his 65th almost 5 years ago. I figured that since it was his first nice watch, he'd wear it right side up. Nope, it's still on the inside of his wrist. When the day comes and I inherit the watch, it'll always be worn on the inside of my wrist too (even though I've never done this).

I really dig that YM model.

There's a pic of Sly Stallone wearing this out there on Instagram, too.

When I was younger, I wore my watch that way for a year or two. But a desk job mostly killed that. I'm still up in the air, but I guess I caved to conformity. It seemed easier to check time with it that way though.
