Submariner vs Submariner Date

So I'm sure this topic has been beat to death. But I was told by someone that the real submariner was the date version. And then there is the no date.

I always thought the true sub was the no date one. Then they created the date to make it more "office" friendly. Which is true? Also which do you guys prefer?

I have to go with the 5 digit Submariner.

There is no Sub No Date.

There is the Sub, and the Sub Date. The ‘someone’ you speak of doesn’t know what they’re talking about. If I’m not mistaken, the 1680 in the late 1960’s was the first date model.

Sub "NO DATE" is Sub. OP was just trying to make sure people understand what he was referring to.

And he wanted to know which Sub came out first as the original Rolex submariner.

Yes, you did and you were right. Submariner (without date) came out first and 8 years later they came out with Model 1680 which was the 1st Sub with date.

It was more than 8 years later. The 1680 was late 60’s, original Sub was 1953.

The Submariner came first, followed by the Submariner Date. Which one is "real" is subjective, and in my opinion, a pointless consideration. My personal preference is for the Date.

If I go on a date with my girlfriend and we're both wearing a Submariner, is that a Submariner date?

What if we visit a decommissioned submarine on our date but aren't wearing Submariners at the time? Would that just be a submarine date?

And, what if we stay home instead of going out but are still both wearing Submariners? Would that be a Submariner no-date?

Sub started it all, date was added later. I'd go date for office work, but I like having the date easily accessible.

The date is very useful. The cyclops is effective.

I kinda wish there was a day indicator as well. It is the day of the week I have a hard time with.

Went back and forth forever, but decided on no date. I found the symmetry made it look much more beautiful. I wasn't a fan of how it was hard to read the hands when they passed behind the cyclops and the date was tough to read if you weren't looking straight on. Also, the cyclops caught dirt pretty easily around the outer edge.

Tons of people get the date, and I agree that it's iconic, but for my tastes it was ND all the way.

The very first Sub had no date (developed in 1953, but not available to the public until 1954) followed later by the date version (1966, reference 1680). There is much info on the web from various sources, the following link is decent though:

https://www.fratellowatches.com/role...riner-history/

Submariner is arguably the most iconic of Rolex's sports watches with a great history. Cheers!

Submariner vs Submariner Date

I found the cyclops to be iconic for me. So Sub date is what I had to have.

I would go with the sub. I have had both 5 and 6 digit references, can’t go wrong with either.

Thank you. I literally cringe every time I see a reference to a “Submariner no date”.

For me the no date looks slightly better, but the date obviously offers a bit more. The date is very handy.

Sometimes it's a useful term for the sake of clarity. It's kind of like saying Explorer I, just so people know you're not talking about the Explorer II. Technically it's incorrect, but if it helps avoid confusion in a discussion, it might be the lesser of the two evils.
