A Watch Winder

...as in "I know I don't need it, but I love to watch my Rolex in one when I am not wearing it."

Anybody else or am I just a little bonkers out here on my own?

I have one winder. I switch out my watches the night before and, simply put tomorrows watch on the winder overnight. When I wake I set the time and thats it. I believe that the mechanical wind mechanism benefits from a cycle and the winder simulates a natural use. However, I don’t subscribe to leaving my collection permanently on a winder when not in use. Mine rest between wrist rotations which, is usually around once every 10-12 days based upon my collection. First world problems eh?

Looks great - but why the difference in spin numbers? Also is there an optimum number - appreciate they all have a slip so more than less..

I know what you mean, looks great seeing them spin. There’s so much conflicting info out there though. Apparently it only serves the purpose if you’re using it on a major complication piece like an annual or perpetual calendar. On simple time and/or date only, it apparently increases the wear on the movement- anyone else heard of such opinions?

I use one specifically for my 1675/3. I appreciate it's vintage charm, but definitely miss the modern quick set date feature. Too much time turning the crown if the date is 10+ days behind.

I have an older Heiden Quad Winder and I used it years ago on a few cheapie automatics but now after conversing with a few folks here it sits unplugged and my watches just rest in it and I just let them wind down.

Like I said after chatting with a few Gents here what they preached made perfect sense and that is if your particular automatics don’t have any complications that need to be maintained like a perpetual calendar it’s best to let the watche(s) run down and just set them when wearing and this past week I am doing just that, I grabbed my DJII this morning and gave it a quick wind and time and date set and on my wrist and it took all of two minutes and when this week is over it will rest for several weeks before it comes back into rotation and this will save wear and tear on the internals.

I’m sure there are those out there that run a winder and I was one of them at one time but now I’m thinking if I can increase the time between services of any watch I own by letting it rest I’m ahead of the game as I can put the $$$ saved toward another watch

If you have a watch with those complicated setttings it is best t use a winder but my current collection does not so I choose the rest method

I bought this orbita over 20 years ago on the recommendation of my AD. Has the ability to set each individual winder to rotate per Manufacture suggestions. It’s held up well over the years. For all my other watches, I have a bunch of these single watch wolf brand, Relatively inexpensive, most of which my AD has given to me every time I buy a new watch since I don’t get any discounts.

The two watch winder on the far left, is a $50 one I bought from eBay for my wife’s two watches, works well too.

I have 2 Wolf singles that I got from Amazon, on for my TAG Aquaracer and one for my sub date. These are great winders, very smooth, very quiet...

Even thought they don't sell winders, a fellow at Watching -- where I an Omega Aqua Terra told me there technical guidelines on both these watches suggest they each should be used with winders with the ability to automatically switch winding direction.

Does anyone else have trouble with this style winder not keeping their Rolex watch(es) running?

I use a no-name winder purchased from Jomashop, and it keeps my watches running nicely.

Thanks to anyone and everyone who can enlighten me regarding their personal experience!

I think they are useful if you have an annual/perpetual calendar complication. Or if you happen to own a Rolex with a 1570 that doesn’t have quickset date. They’re also captivating to look at if displayed nicely.

I like the look of the winder, but i keep mine unplugged. No need for premature wear when not wearing the watch.

If anyone has a watch winder that was sold by Jomashop a few years ago, I could be interested in purchasing it from you, thanks.

I am sorry to hear that. I have had two of these winders for about five years with no issues accept new batteries which I should receive today.

I've used a watch winder all the time for 20 years or so. Me and my wife both have datejust's and mine is older and not easy to set. She likes it so it's always the correct date and time, except for end on some months. But I wonder too if we are wearing them out. I have had mine serviced and it keeps perfect time though.

If the watch is perfectly oiled then there should be little to no wear. Unfortunately there isn't really a scientific way to tell without opening the case. Therefore if you wear the watch often then the wear and tear might be negligible. I just wouldn't suggest you put a watch on a winder that you know you wont be wearing just in case.

Just like a car's engine I would turn it off when I'm not using it. After all it is mechanical and there are lots of moving parts.

Exactly what I do except I set the time on my watch before I pop in on the winder. Interesting.

That is so intelligent of you I absolutely wore out a 1975 Porsche Design black Chrono by leaving it on the winder all the time. Had to go back to porsche for a second servicing just a few years after the first.

If keeping a watch properly wound (the operative word being "properly") causes it to wear out faster, best not to wear it.

Yep, keeping it running is actually good for the watch. And a good winder will let the mainspring wind down some before winding back up.
