Crashing a Chrono?

A few days ago I was playing with a VC chrono and hit the reset button and the chrono indicators did not fully reset. I freaked because the moment I saw that the hands didn’t return I realized I had not stopped the chrono running first. I restarted, stopped and reset all was ok. That got me thinking, that was not the first time (on any given watch) that I had done that. Having read many times that such behavior would crash the movement I realized I have never experienced such – not that I am looking to do so intentionally, not that I do it often either. So, I am wondering how common is a chrono crash? Have any of you put your chrono in the wall?

There may be a stop in place on the reset while the chrono is running to protect the movement.

Seems reasonable. Is that the case on most modern Chronos? I’m certain I’ve even heard Tim Mosso make the claim that trying to rest a running Chrono will crash urge movement. Is that so?
