5512 dial check

I was offered this 5512 and will probably pass because the tritium plots were painted with luminova. Is there any way to reverse this? I'm also not 100% the dial is genuine. 5512 experts please chime in.

Sorry for the low quality pic. I will try to get a few more today.

On another note, I was also offered a beautiful 1981 1655 with b&p. The only problem is the caseback is engraved with initials and dates from the original owner. How much does that effect the value?

This dial doesn't look like it has luminova plots to me but it does look like the hands have been replaced, possibly luminova. I can't speak to the dial.

A watch with caseback engravings doesn't loose too much of its value... You can always source a new one.

Thanks Tom, on the 5512 the plots glow while the hands and pearl do not. I think someone may have applied luminova over the tritium.

Still looking for more opinions on this dial. Thanks.

Doesn't sound good. Shine a blacklight on the dial/hands. That'll tell you a lot about what has been done with the luminous and whether or not it matches or glows unevenly. If you confirm that the dial has been changed/relumed or whatever .... I'd stay away, even if the rest of the dial checks out.

The 12 plot is missing material at the bottom point

Re: caseback

If it's not too deep, it can easily be removed.

I can't really tell by the picture, but this looks like a "neat font" dial. They do glow for a short time (30 seconds or less) after being charged with light. This is normal for this dial and some GMT's around the same time. High phosphorus content from what I have read. Also a rare dial, from what I have seen, less than 4% of the 5512 have this dial. Here is a link for more information on the meters first neat font dail, http://mansfinelife.com/2016/05/10/r...bmariner-dial/

Beautiful watch, it looks correct to me from that pic. Would perhaps need clearer pictures.

knowing the serial number does help, but from what i can see, the bezel insert appears to be a service insert. not much issues there, as a period correct one can be sourced. hands look pretty white, and if they are dead under black light, a chance that they may have been repainted.
