Hard Decisions Today

Yes. First world decisions. I get it. But this forum is first world in all its glory. So, let’s hold off on the judgement please.

That out of the way, I’m realizing after all these years my passion for watches is truly dwindling. Yes, I do love watches. That won’t change. But I think I’m over the need to have a “collection”. And to continue the hunt for the perfect daily, which has always been my driving factor.

Concurrently, my passion for cars is growing exponentially. As per another thread, I do think I’ll make a move soon. And while I could lease, I really just can’t get comfortable with it. At a minimum, I’d rather finance. Me being me, and being risk and debt averse, I like the idea of having a lot of equity in the vehicle. Shite hits the fan, and I sell the car. This mentality helps me sleep.

So, I think it’s time I pick a few keepers, 3 maybe 4, and sell off the rest. I don’t actually have a large collection compared to many here. But I’ve got a few that will fetch enough to mean I’d take zero money out of pocket for the down payment.

Anywho, I know this is a watch forum. And I know most will disagree. I do get it. But heck, I almost never go into any of the actual watch forums anymore. Only on special occasions. And I typically leave those forums, come back into this open discussion, and find myself enjoying these conversations much more. Especially the car discussions.

Anyway, just sharing some thoughts.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday.

Good luck seth. It has to be easier than buying a watch right now. I feel dejected.

You have to follow your passions. And if it’s taking you in the way of cars then it’s a no brainer. I’m not a car guy at all but I do like nicer vehicles. What I hate though is seeing them depreciate year over year. I’m really not the kind of guy to have so much money tied up in silly things like watches but the one thing they let’s me rationalize it is that I’m not really losing much money, if at all, and in this market they’re probably appreciating. If cars were like they it would be a simple answer for me.

That being said, sometimes life is to short to worry about small financial losses if one can afford them. So if your passion is moving towards cars go for it. Most watches are easily replaceable if things change!

Thanks for that. I can relate. And likely it’s part of my loss of passion to the hobby.

Yeah. I like that about watches too. But it’s never been my motivating factor.

And I get your point about a depreciating asset. I just love cars. And want to be around them as much as possible.

Seth, from your time on the forum, you seem to fall in and out love of watches. Seems like now is another low point.... so, focus more on cars for now, and I’m sure you’ll be back.

Well, that’s a great point. You are absolutely right.

This feels different. But hard to ignore history. Food for thought. Thanks buddy.

Ha. I don’t know just yet.

Heading to the gym, then a long drive with the top down. Contemplation time.

The best part of having some “ toys” in your life is being able to mix things up.
Out with the old and in with the new.
Then sometimes scrambling around getting the old back

Have fun, Seth!!!
I look forward to the next car thread

Cars and watches are two of the main three hobbies for me. As others have noted, I focus on one of the three most times. If I lose a bit of interest in one, I pivot to another and so on. Usually circle back every couple years or so.

That said, what has kept me interested/engaged with a particular hobby is the people I’ve been fortunate to meet through these common interests. In many cases, the relationships have lasted decades.

I hope you continue to stick around.

Keep 3 or 4, that's plenty, and enjoy the car. I would focus on keeping the hard to replace one's.

Thanks my friend.

I’m not going anywhere. Not unless I get banned.

Definitely it’s the people of this forum. It’s what I enjoy most about this place. People like you.

I have one nice car and one great watch. They are two of my favorite "stuff" purchases ever. There is SO MUCH more utility from having one of something nice than two or three or ten. So if you want to keep your favorite watch and daily it (oh, the horror!), that's awesome! And enjoy your new track car! Although cars do depreciate pretty quickly unless you are able to get the Ferrari/Porsche GT whatever that trades like a SS Daytona, if that doesn't bother you, enjoy it! I tend to keep cars for a long time, so the depreciation hit on an expensive car is not so bad per year.

Do what feels best. Buying "stuff" is not forever. Buy what makes you happy. And sell what you aren't enjoying enough.

Seth, stop dilly-dallying with all these minor-life decisions and get down to the really important one:

Is my room ready?

It's funny you mention this, Seth. I was thinking about this a lot lately myself. Many years of this hobby has me confident I'll always be into watches but several factors altered things a bit for me.

I've owned just about every watch I wanted and sold most with no regrets. Very few left that I actually want to own and most of those are brands other than Rolex for the difficulty of obtaining certain pieces.

I hardly visit the watch related forums here or anywhere now too it seems. I'm all about enjoying what I have and living life to the fullest. So much to experience and enjoy out there.

I know you'll figure out what's best for you and make the move!

I am thinking keep the following:

Snoopy
RG YM
DJ41 Blue Dial
AP 15400 Silver Dial

Move everything else.

I don't want to sell the 5726. I love the thing. But sell that and the DD40 in WG, and all the sudden, I am sitting pretty!!! Just those two alone and this becomes a relatively easy purchase.

well put my friend.

I feel very similarly about this. and only two watches have I ever regretted selling, I have gotten back. snoopy and the 116655. so those are safe. everything else is potentially gone.
