International Shipping Help

Hello,

I have been looking for a particular vintage Rolex for some time now and recently a seller in Italy listed one. It is a good price but I have never purchased internationally and curious if any of you have.

I have done quite a bit of research online and on this forum and seems the customs bill would be roughly 10% the purchase price.

Most of the info I found online and on here is a few years old. I don't want to purchase this watch then get hit with a exorbitant customs bill so if anyone would please enlighten me some I would appreciate it.

Thank You

In the not-so-distant past I paid around 3% at US customs when declaring a watch at the airport, not 10%. And recently I was negotiating a watch from EU and was told that import fees to the US range from 1% to 5% depending on state.

Now, with a vintage, you can always ask your seller to put a more "reasonable" price if you are concerned about the import fees; unless you are more much more concerned about insurance. I guess if you are buying a full set 4-digit Daytona, it will be cheaper to buy a ticket to Italy and wear it back!

Just curious, who quote you the 1-5% import fees?

Check the United States Harmonized Tariff Code. On a stainless steel watch The customs charge usually work out to about 3%. Different percentage of the value of the watch are allocated to the case band and movement.

Any duty calculated will depend on what the actual item is.

So many doctored vintage watches around that I would buy only unseen from a very reputable dealer like i.e. Springer.

Just make sure you know what you' are doing and research the seller.
A few percent on taxes is the least to worry about on the vintage market.
