washing your watch?

I've seen a few posts about guys bathing their watches in soap and water. How can this be safe for rubber gaskets? Doesn't the soap dry them out? I have never seen a manufacturer recommend anything other than using tap water. Did I miss something?

You would be amazed how much dirt and crime collects on the bracelet and lugs. That's why the pins wear out prematurely.

Just wear it already

I bathe my watch everyday in a tepid bath of pure lavender extract and a touch of baking soda. I then massage its links with my thumbs, releasing the tension between its sore lugs. Afterward, I light some candles for it, dry it with my warm breath, and lay it on a very small pillow for the night.

Okay, I'm done.

Meh...I am unsure that my Rolex can handle regular life, so I had a special anechoic negative pressure vessel constructed at GREAT EXPENSE. Within this vibration isolated chamber, slightly greasy negative ions are gently bathed over the case and a finishing polish of 5N particulate voided argon gas is used to reinforce the incredibly weak 904L steel.

Do your bezels work after getting their lubricating oil washed away with soap? (or do y'all just re-oil those for good measure after a soak with suds?

My watch is literally so bullet proof...it is around actual (whoops!!! Can’t talk about that). I think the only thing I haven’t done to my watch is purposefully dunk it in boiling nitric acid. It is literally more durable than I am. All parts of it. Including the flawlessly operational bezel that never gets any “love” from me. It is a tool. I use it accordingly.

If you’re worried just wash the bracelet with soap and water.

I read an article ages ago about a professional auto detailer who rinsed his contact lenses in various soaps to determine which left the least residue. Ivory liquid won and it's what I use on my DD every few days.

Warm water and a couple drops of dawn. Mix it up, drop the watch in for a few minutes, use a soft toothbrush and give it a once over, rinse it off, dry it.

Since you're referencing a rotating bezel, I assume you have a Sub, GMT, YM (or whatever), all of which are more than capable of handling a little soap and water.

My M serial (2008ish) sub has been washed with soap hundreds of times over the years in the shower/sink. I leave an old soft toothbrush in the shower and usually just put some soap right on it. Scrub down the whole watch and done.
It's been hit with direct steam too, all good.

I just wear mine into the shower once a week or so and wash it off with soap in there. Rinse and pat dry when I get out. Cleaning it regularly is much better for longevity versus any negative effects.

More so from being worn too loosely.

That would also bullet proof your watch against any "is it safe to use it in [__]", so good idea!
