That is one of the most interesting watches I’ve seen. The provenance is very cool!

Dude engraved his own watch with a nail (?).

Cool soldier.

Looks like he’s wearing an SAS beret in that photo too so I’d expect he and his watch saw a little action

One of the local guys I booze with here an Australian guy, his father was an Australian Vietnam Veteran. Saw a bit of combat and gets a special pension for his Vietnam service so my buddy says. Rightly so if he does.

Met him and he was still at his age looking like he could go hump the bush.

Great story to the OP. Thanks for sharing.

Totaly wrong auction. If it would be at Sothebys NY or Phillips in Geneve, 3-times more, I am sure...

And the biggest mistake, no limit, so it went for any price.
10.000 is very well bought.

12K for that ruined Watch? I don’t care who the Guy was,Doing that to a Watch is ridiculous.I also collect Firearms and Owners liked to electropencil their SS Number under the grips.....It reduces the value about 1/3.

We don' need no stinkin' scratches!

10 mins with the ol' Cape Cod will bring that up lovely!

What nice provenance and 'interesting' patina.
Tough lads those SAS Aussies.

Well, I kind of agree with this, but you might find some collectors who love this sort of provenance.

What's really funny is that the auction house included this line in its listing: "The case has only been cleaned and of course not been polished or ALTERED in any way."

Um, I beg to differ!

Someone overpaid. This isn’t a rare milspec issue watch. Some dude bought it whilst out on liberty, then gouged the snot out of it fearing his mates might steal it. The case is trashed.

I had one of these passed down to me recently, and it has become my daily wearer. ‘68 GMT MK1, full box & papers. I love it.

And today, with saw dust from doing some framing at the house.

It's had a rough life, but it's got tons of character. I respect that others may disagree, but I'd personally prefer it over a new 116610 ceramic.

Again, same watch at a Sothebys or Christies Auktion in NY, 3 times more...
Very well bought!

I couldn’t agree more. I wouldn’t pay ten bucks for that watch.

He found useful purpose for all that blank metal space. Although he’s no Bram Ramon, I’m thinking the detractors will never understand the “why”.

Great watch and story. I wish I could have purchased a Rolex when it came time for my big watch purchase during the Vietnam war but I ended up with a Seiko DX automatic which I still own today. The Rolex brand was a little too pricey for me as a private in 1972. Since then, I've more than made up for that missed opportunity!!!

Not sure I dig the "engraving" either...but I'd prefer this over some of the custom aftermarket gaudy case work I've seen lately on some bracelets/cases....doesn't say much heh.

Exactly. Anyone with $8450+tax can have a pristine 116710LN, but that watch has got a little history behind it.
