Honorable mention for Black Mass. This is a movie I didn't really love when it came out, but I appreciate it more and more every time I watch it, which is up to a half dozen times at this point. Depp gave a really good nuanced performance as Whitey Bulger. He claims it's his favorite role of all time.

King of New York is a must. One of CW’s finest.

Also agree with Bronx tale, Just for the biker seen alone
(I had the opportunity to work on the set in Brooklyn for a day:).

The 20 best gangster movies of all time?

Goodfellas is not only my favorite gangster movie, but I’d put it my top five favorite movies of all time irregardless of genre.

I would add White Heat and Public Enemy. Cagney made a great gangster.

Can’t really say I agree. At this point Malibus Most Wanted might as well be on there.

The author sure doesn’t look like a Boomer. A Boomer would’ve probably had a better list and remembered watching some of these classics at release not influenced by years of internet opinion. Do yourself a favor and remove that Boomer insult from your tool box. You sound like the stereotypical for a different generation. I come from that newer generation (though admittedly the older end) and these Boomer insults make us sound unintelligent.

These kind of lists are kind of interesting because it's fun to see other people's interpretation of a genre of movie.

First thing to note. The movies are listed in ORDER OF BEING RELEASED, not in order of how they rate.

Second is that obviously there are ones left out and ones we like better that others, and also what constitutes a gangster movie.

Thirdly, we all have actors/directors we like better so that skews our enjoyment of the movie.

Fourthly, all movies are a product of their time/era, and some "hold up" better than others. Some movies look dated relatively quickly, and others are 'classics".

Fifthly, sometimes we see movies we didn't like, and later we watch it again and change our minds. It may not be the movie, but rather our mood or whatever at the time we first saw it. The reverse can also happen.

And lastly, some actors originally look "fresh", then 10 movies later they are caricatures of themselves.

What is fun is that in these lists we sometimes find movies we missed, and can search them out.
