Is Rolex the best wristwatch in the world?

I think so, but I am biased.

Thoughts welcome. To me the fit and durability are quite fantastic.

In my view, yes. But I expect most of the answers will ask what your criteria are.

Hard for me to say that... In fact my gut instinct says no. But I guess the others I'm thinking of has different shortcomings compared to Rolex..... That's a bold claim IMO regardless.

There are better watches out there, but for a great looking work of art that takes one hell of an ass kicking and keeps on ticking It is top shelf IMPO

Is Rolex the best wristwatch in the world?

What makes a watch the best? If fit and finish is the criteria then there are other brands that exceeds Rolex quality. Durability? Even Rolex watches break. Value for money? Definitely no. Resale value? One of the best.

Exactly this. By saying "best" its pretty broad since people look at watches for different aspects/appeal.

Probably the "most recognized" brand.

And certainly among the very durable.

It is the most well known brand... a symbol of success to the hard working.

If you asked 10 out of 10 people on the street what a rolex was you would get the same answer, an expensive and quality timepiece.

Now do that with Audemars, Vacheron, Patek. These dont have close to the same recognition. Are they better? Def not to me

Pls define "best".

My own version of "best" comes with these considerations - technical excellence, pedigree, aesthetics, finishing and durability. And Rolex is not the best based on my definition.

Best at what?

It has one of the best brand name recognitions in the world. Everything else is subjective.

No.

In the late 50s and early 60s NASA tested several watches. Only WALTHAM and OMEGA made the cut.

Heck, a Soviet made Sturmanskie was the first watch in space.

Still, I prefer ROLEX.

I can't say what's "best" because that varies with each person.

But personally if I could only have 1 watch, and money were no object, i'd pick a Rolex

Subjectively, yes.
For my needs, objectively, yes as well, but just by a the hair on a gnats ass.
Couple things they could do to improve, rubber options on divers, jump hour hand on a couple more models, and freaking availability.

The entire production of PP is fewer timepieces than one year of Rolex mass-production. I love Rolex, have many more than I could ever need, but please, let's not be delusional. Had this discussion about Cadillac being the best motor car made back in high-school.

I know this is a fan site for Rolex but really you can answer yes this question?

best mass produced watch? yes would agree there - I love rolex and I would add one or two more to my rotation if they could be bought at msrp

but come on Lange and PP , amongst others, are on a different level if we are talking "best" watch

Is Rolex the best wristwatch in the world?

Best tool watches, in my opinion yes based on reliability, innovation and history. Best wristwatch in general though is impossible to pin down since individual preferences matter. I don’t think anyone would argue Rolex is even close to the top when it comes to complicated watches in the haute horology arena because that’s just not their core competency. That’s why their sports models generally appreciate while Cellini’s depreciate.

value preservation? excellent yes but outside of SS sports watches is it that good? better than a stainless nautilus?

build quality? again in its market sector yes probably the best but the best in the whole industry it is just not true - and others are catching up

brand recognition? really that is a factor in the best watch? generally amongst the general public probably yes but to WIS types like our membership probably not

so roex for me is probably the best "brand" in the industry but not close to the best watch

Depends on what your definition of “best” is... If we’re talking about pure brand recognition or the build quality of the product, then definitely Rolex is up there. But if we’re talking about artistry and complications from a horological perspective, there are quite a lot of other brands that are way better than Rolex in this regard
