That’s what planes are for. Go for it! Then have it mailed home to save on tax.

Are you randomly calling ADs in the US?

I would have wired them same day and picked it up. Then made them ship it back to your home after you go there to see them in person.

It is a long weekend... and there's no premium.

Factoring in the time, flight, additional transportation expenses and possible hotel costs and I might as well just do my second option, which lets me stay in DC. That option is going to a local AD that has a stock of ceramic sub dates but is selling them with a 2k premium.

Flight = $1328 same day
Cab = $100
Total: around $1500 plus 12+ hours traveling/waiting in airports

Spreading it out over multiple days would just have more costs, and more time.

Flight = 500 usd return (ball park guess)
Cab = 100 usd there and back to the airport.

I would have done it for 600 USD. The Sub goes for 2K above MSRP now. Save 1400.

It'll cost me closer to the 2k to get there round trip. Even if I were to be saving a couple hundred bucks, is it worth the day or two of traveling? I think I'll be patient and wait for a local AD to call my number, not pay 2k over MSRP, and not spend a day or two traveling to Texas. If someone wants to go for this one, though, PM me so at least I can help a fellow member.

Rolex: Mission Accomplished.

People are actually considering (doing the math..etc) flying half way across the country to purchase a Submariner Date?

When this watch was stacked 3 deep in the showcase, it was a strong seller, but nobody would have considered any of this....

Now? People will contemplate the outrageous to acquire one..

That is marketing at it's finest.

I've flown halfway across the world for a watch before. Luckily I was able to bundle it with some work.

We've done it for cars, wedding dresses, shoes, etc..
People fly to Argentina for hand made shoes or France for personally mixed perfumes and limited edition leather goods from LV or Goyard.
Not really that weird in the scheme of things. When I bought my F80 M3, the only place within a 600 miles radius to have an allocation was OKC. Turned it into a road trip to pick up my new car four months later.

I've flown halfway across the country for a car, but that was $45K, not $9K.

I almost flew to San Francisco (I'm in NC) for a BLRO (WG) but changed my mind.

Too bad you don't have a friend in TX that can do it for you. I have a friend in Houston who would do it, but I'm guessing that this is in Dallas, just guessing because the OP won't tell us anything (who can blame him?).

I wonder too how he found it...

I flew from Chicago to Connecticut for a car. Well worth it! It is hard to believe someone would have to fly 1000 miles to get a basic Sub though.

OP offered to reveal location via PM - he’s been calling some ADs around the country to avoid the MSRP uplift by his local AD.

I could see flying to another airport if the airport AD had the watch I wanted. I think I could see myself doing that if I had nothing else better to do. Wouldn't even have to pack anything.

Yeah, there’s no shortage from Rolex. Just an overabundance of people sucking up supply wherever it can be found only to flip it for $1,000 more due to the “shortage” they themselves created. And it’s not just the greys doing it.

Around 2007 we were at the Cayman Island AD Kirks ,we were purchasing a lady's datejust . We wanted the mother of pearl dial with roman numerals I asked if they had one in the back and the salesperson replied this was the only one in the system . He noted my stainless sub and said if you want a new one of those we have 27 of them in stock.

Got a call, then wired the full amount, and picked it up in person. That's how my relationship started. I've been offered 2 more Pateks in the mean time that will be allocated to me. A third one is in the woodworks, but no set "date" for it to arrive. I'm mostly excited about one of the Pateks I'll be picking up hopefully in Q2. Another trip halfway around the world

I'd much rather pay a small premium to a local TS for such a watch. Not worth the time/$$/effort to pick up a very common model.

That’s *some* watch!

Feels akin to taking delivery of a BMW in Europe

That is certainly not allowed by Rolex USA. You should call/write a letter to Rolex letting them know of this AD's practice. This is strictly forbidden from what I understand.
