Owners of the latest black OP - what do you like and dislike about it?

I've gotten a call from my AD that they have a black OP for me.

I currently have the silver OP. It's beautiful, especially the way it reflects light.

I know I can just go down to the AD and look, but they need to transport it from their HQ, which makes me want to do a bit more research before I get them to show it to me.

Can you give me your thoughts on your black OP (latest model)?

How does it compare to other OPs you've looked at?

Is the dial "boring" or is it pretty?

Any other thoughts appreciated.

Thanks for your advice!

it's just a black dial watch much like any other black dial watch.

Thanks for your reply.

That's kind of my concern with it.

Do the hour markers catch the light like on the silver dial?

First post here. Coincidentally, I acquired this recently from an AD - it was somehow available. It was never seriously on my radar, as I thought the dial would look a bit plasticky. But I found it rather nice in person. It doesn't look like a plastic/laquer finish, more of a sunburst black with a matt sheen and it catches the light beautifully. I've not seen a silver OP in person so can't quite give you a direct comparison, but hope my description gives you a sense. Ask to see it if you don't mind!

The reason the hour markers catch the light on the salver dial, is that they are yellow gold. The silver dial is the only OP with yellow gold hands and indices. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any wrist shots of the black OP here. If you want a black dial watch, without a date, why not consider an Explorer 1?

Aways buy the watch you want to own and wear that's the most important and the only opinion that really matters the OP is a Rolex classic no matter the dial.

The Black OP is an amazing piece. A co worker of mine has one and all the silver markers on the dial shine when the light / sun hits them. The lume sticks look amazing on the watch as well. The no date shows the beauty of the entire dial. It’s a great versatile time piece IMO.

the Exp1 has a lacquered black dial vs the sunburst I think that makes a big difference for the wearer.

Absolutely. I love that dial on my own 36 mm Explorer.

Current OP has a Bright Black dial, the previous had a jet black (don’t know the official name) which I’d recommend as the case is also nicer.

Listen to the frog man and not those trying to sell you their own watches. Your opinion is the only one that matters.

I don’t own one but it seems like the perfect dial for a Ninja Master.

Most underwhelming configuration from Rolex.
I would go with silver if OP ever comes. The fact that you are having doubts means you pass it.

I went with the Explorer over the OP. I prefer the dial. I feel the Explorer does wear a bit smaller than the OP. The Black OP is nice but I do already have 3 OP's

My wife has a Black Op34 and it is her GADA watch. She wears it quite often when out and about and gets plenty of wrist time…

It’s a pass for me. Too many other black dial Rolex that I would rather have.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

Lots of different opinions!

To give an update, the AD (official distributer, as per the Rolex website) will only sell it to be if I buy a Tudor.

It's totally ridiculous. Obviously I said no.

I’d call Rolex customer service about that. Rolex strongly disapproves of that practice. I’m surprised they are holing an OP hostage. I agree with you. That is totally ridiculous….

Get an explorer 1 36mm instead - much better looking watch imo

Never been a fan of smooth bezels, they reflect the light in a fun house mirror way.

I've got a date to see a silver 41mm op in 2 weeks
I must make a decision there and then as if I pass, I doubt the AD is gonna come back to me and he's agreed to "save it" until I see it !
Pressure is on.
Of course if someone insists on buying it before I do, I'm toast.

You already have a silver OP, why would you also want to add a black OP? Why not get a... black Datejust, or something else altogether?

Anyway, I think the black sunburst dial is pretty standard. Mine's an OP39, but I believe the black dial on the OP36 and OP41 are the same.

It's sort of a 'meh' watch for me. I'd make the jump up to a Datejust. It's a more special watch. If you like a more utilitarian watch, the OP is a good choice.

Yep I'd like to but can't find any contact information on their website.

Shady behavior by the AD, but probably standard practice in Hong Kong.

I don't like watches with dates (not sure why) and I like the simplicity of the OP. It's not trying to be anything other than a very nice watch.

Yes on a recent mission I nearly got discovered due to wearing a 41" Tiffany OP with aftermarket diamonds.

The black dial seems more reserved and subtle...

My wife recently took delivery of a black OP36. I think the dial is quite charming. I had not seen one in person prior to delivery, but had assumed it would be a gloss black finish. To my surprise it was a sunburst dial. While not as vibrant as the blue sunburst dial on my OP41, it still plays with the light beautifully and gives the watch a lot of character.

Have you tried on the Explorer? A bit more interesting to look at while doing the exact same thing.

I have an OP and I wouldn't add another. Nothing wrong with it, just too much overlap.
