Royal Oak History/Marketing Question
I have a Royal Oak history/marketing question. I understand the origin story about AP tasking Genta with designing a stainless sports watch which was ultimately inspired by a diving helmet. The name "Royal Oak" was derived from the British Naval fleet which ties back to the tree that protected King Charles II from the Roundheads. AP liked the name "Royal Oak" and the history behind it to convey "royal prestige and longevity".
Various articles state that AP was primarily targeting the Italian market for this watch, yet they chose to name the watch steeped in British history. Is there a historical connection that ties the AP brand or it's founders to Great Britain somehow, or was this simply a way to attract British customers? Thanks in advance. |

Interesting... I, too, have read the same Genta stories. I find the whole legacy fascinating. I do not have an answer to your question, but imagine there are some historians here who may...

Apparently, the original name for the watch was The Safari. Name and watch were not a match and AP renamed it just before the launch.
