Just breathtaking! The quarter by the Endurance really highlights the incredible detail of a model that size.
Bravo! I’d love to find/buy/commission a model of my dad’s destroyer one day. I simply don’t have the eyesight or steadiness of hand...not to mention the skill. |

A fantastic talent Joe. I just love old ships especially the USA's pre dreadnaught ships of the Spanish American War era. Those of which we'll never see the like again.

After 17 days of work, 554 individual scratch-built pieces, my model of the Austro-Hungarian Dreadnought SMS Viribus Unitis Model is finished. The model depicts the ship as-built in her Montecucculin Green camouflage. The model is 9.5cm or 3.75” long.
Using drawings of the ship that I scaled down, the hull and main turrets were made from maple, the hull being a sold piece. The deck was planked with laser cut basswood, the funnels from turned and machines brass, the bulk of the superstructure was made from styrene and brass. Masts, gun barrels, and torpedo net booms were also made from brass. The awning net supports, torpedo net rigging and mast rigging are all tungsten wire. Flags were hand painted on foil with oils and acrylics. The paint consists of black poly-acrylic primer with green-blue from Vallejo. A very thin wash of grayish brown oil was applied to bring out some of the hull details. Everything was sealed with Vallejo matte lightly airbrushed. I chose a much lighter shade of green since the prototype color, Oliv Mittel, would have been far too dark on a ship this scale. I think the green-blue from Vallejo captured the essence of the Montecucculin camouflage.

Wow, that's unbelievable, Joe. Attention to detail is mind-blowing at any scale. Given the side of this though I'm taken aback.
Where ever all of these are displayed is like a little museum of sorts. |

Here are some photos of my progress on my scratch-built, 1/1500 scale HMS Dreadnought, 125’ to 1” at just over 4” long overall.
The hull was made from boxwood, the deck planked with bass. The balance of the detail is mostly brass, with some styrene, aluminum, and tungsten wire. The funnel was made from aluminum sheet, and is hollow all the way through. Probably overkill, as I included not only the external piping but internal as well. The handrails are brass, awning stanchions are tungsten wire. I’ll post more as I continue the superstructure. Total parts count at the time of this post is 606.

Wow, that's fantastic! You know Joe, you should really consider starting a YouTube channel if you haven't already. So many out there would enjoy this as much as we are as well. This hobby had to help with any ATC stress I'll bet!

Thanks guys!
Well, I’m pretty active in the FB model groups, and I’m in a lot of scale model magazines these days, published pretty often. So often I have to turn down offers because I don’t have the time to photograph the models for the articles. Ships of this size and video wouldn’t really work. I’d have to film them under a macro lens and they really aren’t meant to be enjoyed that close up, and filming them would slow down my construction if I did it as I went. My editors are always on me to take more photos as I go, but some of the steps are cumbersome. I am considering starting a website where I can showcase them all together in a clear and concise format. Not really advertising as I don’t sell them, and I’ve stopped taking commission work. Just a tidy place to keep my photos.

I was able to get some work done tonight:
Forward funnel, admiral’s cabin, and searchlight deck all finished.

Wow, nicely done! I totally get where you're coming from with regards to building them under a microscope on camera (literally).
It's good to know about the magazine's though! Enthusiasts really appreciate that content and it has an impact on them. I'll never forget getting my first ever issue of Radio Controlled Car Action magazine in 1998. It took an underlying passion and turned it into a life-long hobby. I haven't built a model in a long time but this thread really makes me want to. They're nothing like the ones you're doing with regards to detail or skill level but a perfect way to disconnect and de-stress, especially in the winters here. |

This is amazing. I mess around a bit with model trains and structures in HOn3, and think that is small. This work blows my mind.

I guess I kinda forgot to update this thread. So here are some of the modes I’ve finished over the past 9 months or so. All built from scratch, no kits or commercial parts:
