Anyone wear a Pocket Watch?

Curious if anyone here has worn, wears or thought about wearing a pocket watch?

Plenty of nice vintage fusee and chains and up downs to choose from on eBay and they’re not all expensive. Nice big dials and look like they’d go well with a chain and a waist coat.

Careful. A lot of basic watches labelled up as Patek or Vacheron etc. Particularly smelly are converted pocket watches with straps attached. So you can wear a 'piece of history' on your wrist etc. Inside a fake case and dial. At best. If by some miracle the whole thing isn't fake. Don't touch this garbage basically.

Thanks for the warning. Was thinking of just dipping the toes with a Waltham for £100 to £200 for now.

My father's pocket watch has lousy power reserve (<24 hours). It is too much work to use.

Alot of effort do you really think youd reach in your pocket and pull it out when you want to check the time? much more conveniant to glance at your wrist.

My Grandfather's 1906 watch that he bought when he came to the country through Ellis Island in the same year from Slovakia.
The $2.5 Gold Coin is also dated 1906.

I think the recasing of old Swiss pocket watch movements, is a great way to salvage them. Unlike there American counterparts, they are almost impossible to put back in an original case. If you know a little about them it is easy to spot the fakes.
They are not shock resistant like post WWII wristwatches however. So great care needs to be taken.

The American companies made very few complications, outside the wind indicator, but the accuracy and finish on the time only watches were superior to Swiss watches.
I would say, that you can find a pocket watch with a better finished movement than most watches today for under $500.

Pocket watches are awesome and I am own a few. It’s rare I get to wear them with the vest the proper way but it’s extremely cool. So much history. I don’t see why people are commenting on using their phone when it has nothing to do with the subject. You either like watches in this case pocket watches or you don’t. Not complicated.

I’m a new member but haven’t done an intro yet as I’m waiting for another watch to come in. But in the meantime, this is my great-grandfather’s Hampden-Dueber. I received it earlier this year from my grandfather. It wasn’t working and had a faded yellow crystal (plastic?). I spent probably more than it’s worth on a cleaning and a new crystal and was quite pleased with the results. My favorite part was finding out it has dark blue hands...I hadn’t seen that before.

It stopped working the other day so I need to take it to my local watch shop...I don’t care what it costs...it will keep running for another century!

This is me (well, most of it is me) with my Great Grandfather's YG 1847 Rotherhams Pocket Watch and solid gold fob chain. Don't have a lot of opportunity to wear it but do when I can. People tolerate a little eccentricity from old blokes.
(Thanks Tom for the head - hang on, that doesn't sound good...)

I’m not reliving my elementary school days getting teased and bullied so I can wear the horological equivalent of a retainer chained to my belt.

(Monocle? Maybe.)

I had a German digital pocket watch with a skeleton dial that looked like a pallweber, and an octagonal Rolex pocket watch which had the same base movement as the first Panerai. wish I had kept them both.

I have a very similar pocket watch also. It was my grandfathers. It spends all of its time in the safe.

Very interesting comments thank you. In the end I decided to start the ball rolling with this whippersnapper - a ‘73 Seiko Skyliner which is making its way over here from Japan.
